hey!

i've got a problem with wine under gentoo. i try to get a game running (Utawarerumono) under wine, but i have got the following problem:

when running the game in portage's wine 1.1.26 with the following use-flags:
Code:
[stephan@localhost ~]$ equery uses wine
[ Searching for packages matching wine... ]
[ Colour Code : set unset ]
[ Legend : Left column  (U) - USE flags from make.conf              ]
[        : Right column (I) - USE flags packages was installed with ]
[ Found these USE variables for app-emulation/wine-1.1.26 ]
 U I
 + + X          : Adds support for X11
 - - alsa       : Adds support for media-libs/alsa-lib (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture)
+ + cups       : Add support for CUPS (Common Unix Printing System)
 - - dbus       : Enable dbus support for anything that needs it (gpsd, gnomemeeting, etc)
+ + esd        : Adds support for media-sound/esound (Enlightened Sound Daemon)
 - + gecko      : Add support for the Gecko engine when using iexplore
 - - gnutls     : Adds support for net-libs/gnutls (TLS 1.0 and SSL 3.0 support)
 - - hal        : Enable Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) support
 - - jack       : Adds support for the JACK Audio Connection Kit
+ + jpeg       : Adds JPEG image support
 - - lcms       : Adds lcms support (color management engine)
 - - ldap       : Adds LDAP support (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol)
 - - nas        : Adds support for network audio sound
+ + ncurses    : Adds ncurses support (console display library)
+ + opengl     : Adds support for OpenGL (3D graphics)
+ + oss        : Adds support for OSS (Open Sound System)
+ + png        : Adds support for libpng (PNG images)
 - - samba      : Adds support for SAMBA (Windows File and Printer sharing)
 - - scanner    : Adds support for scanner hardware (e.g. build the sane frontend in kdegraphics)
+ + ssl        : Adds support for Secure Socket Layer connections
 - - win64      : Build a 64bit version of Wine (won't run Win32 binaries)
 - - xcomposite : Enable support for the Xorg composite extension
 - - xinerama   : Add support for the xinerama X11 extension, which allows you to stretch your display across multiple monitors
+ + xml        : Add support for XML files

the game does not run at all and gives only the message: "Cannot find neccessary file.".

now i've tried playonlinux, because under archlinux this game worked quite well. and well, it is working under playonlinux with wine 1.1.26. i have used the same game configuration for both, but playonlinux's version works, and portage's not.

so, where is the difference?

I am not sure this has to do with your USE flags. It might be something simpler, maybe the way that playonlinux sets the wine directories or something else. Have you tried running it from the same directory where the .exe lives? Maybe it's just having a hard time finding a .dll file or something. I am no specialist in wine, but try providing a sample of the output so we can take a look at it.
