It's been a while sense I have updated my Gentoo system. Among all the updates it also updated ati-drivers and xorg. Now xorg refuses to start and if I try to modprobe fglrx it fails with a memory error. I'll post more info when I get home. I have a mobility radeon x1400 in the laptop. Do I need to downgrade the drivers? If I do what version do I go to? And what version of xorg-server do I downgrade to. Also, does it work with the most recent kernel? I am still on 2.6.28 but will be upgrading to 2.6.30 when I get some time.

Thanks for any help. Been 3+ years now and still waiting for ati 3d drivers to work properly. Rediculous.

Over here I have this:

x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati-6.12.2
x11-base/xorg-server-1.6.2-r1
sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.30-r2

... and all is well. 8)

You are using the opensource driver. Does it support 3d on my card now? If it does then I will definitely switch.

I tried downloading to xorg-server 1.5.3 and ati-drivers 8.593 and now X starts up then immediately freezes with the X cursor in the middle of the screen. I have to ssh into my machine and shut it down that way to get out of it. Do newer versions of fglrx not work right or are they broken? Anyone know a version that should work or something else I am missing?

Did you follow the xorg-server-1.5 upgrade guide?
