Good news everyone. I managed to get Lirc working with the development kernel.

Two things in advance:
1. This is my first (public) ebuild and I'm not sure if I did something wrong or forgot anything important, so use at your own risk
2. I'm from germany and I don't claim that my english is perfect, yet I believe it should be understandable.

The kernel patch

There is a kernel patch available from a guy called Flameeye. According to his postings in the kernel mailing list he plans to submit it to the 2.6 kernel. I think this would be a gread addition!
Download the file (http://flameeyes.web.ctonet.it/lirc/patch-lirc-20030802.diff.bz2) and unpack it to /usr/src/

Next, create a symlink named 'linux-2.6.0-test2' that points to your current 2.5/2.6 kernel directory, unless this is not already the name of your kernel directory. For example:
Code:
ln -s /usr/src/linux-2.6.0-test4-mm1 /usr/src/linux-2.6.0-test2

This is needed because the patch expects this directory as the current kernel dir. Now start patching the kernel by entering the following command:
Code:
patch -p0 <patch-lirc-20030806.diff

Your kernel now includes some Lirc drivers, which were formerly included in the lirc package. All you have to do to enable them is to set the proper config options in the kernel.
The Lirc drivers can be found under Character devices ---> Linux InfraRed Controller --->

Now recompile your kernel and install the modules.

Note: if you find a /dev/lirc file, delete it and create a directory with the same name. Seems as if the naming of the devices has been changed. They are now called /dev/lirc/lirc0 and so on...

The CVS ebuild

The next thing we need are the userspace utilities, like lircd, irexec, etc.
In my case lirc-0.6.6 no longer compiled and the old binaries that were still installed didn't work either, so I created a CVS ebuild for the new lirc-0.7 package.

Go to your local portage directory and create the ebuild named app-misc/lirc-cvs/lirc-cvs-0.7.ebuild with the following content:

Code:

 # Copyright 1999-2003 Gentoo Technologies, Inc. and Rob Cakebread
 # Distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License v2
 # $Header: $

 ECVS_SERVER="cvs.lirc.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/lirc"
 ECVS_MODULE="lirc"
 ECVS_USER="anonymous"
 ECVS_PASS=""
 ECVS_AUTH="pserver"

 inherit cvs eutils

 S="${WORKDIR}/lirc"
 DESCRIPTION="LIRC is a package that allows you to decode and send infra-red signals of many (but not all) commonly used remote controls."
 HOMEPAGE="http://www.lirc.org"
 LICENSE="GPL-2"
 SLOT="0"
 KEYWORDS="x86"
 DEPEND="virtual/linux-sources"

 src_compile() {
    export WANT_AUTOCONF_2_5=1
   export WANT_AUTOMAKE=1.6
    if [ -x ./autogen.sh ] ; then
       /bin/bash ./autogen.sh \
        --host=${CHOST} \
        --prefix=/usr \
        --infodir=/usr/share/info \
        --mandir=/usr/share/man \
        --with-kerneldir="/usr/src/linux" \
        --with-moduledir="/lib/modules/${KV}/misc" \
        --disable-manage-devices \
        ${LIRC_OPTS} || die "./autogen.sh failed"
    else
       die "no autogen.sh script found"
    fi

    #/bin/bash ./setup.sh || die "./setup.sh failed"

   ./configure --with-x --with-driver=none

    emake || die 'parallel make failed'
 }

 src_unpack() {
    cvs_src_unpack
    cd ${S}

 }

 src_install() {
    make DESTDIR=${D} install || die

    exeinto /etc/init.d
    doexe ${FILESDIR}/lircd
 }

Now create a digest with 'ebuild lirc-cvs-0.7.ebuild digest'.
Supposedly you also want a lircd init script, so create a file lircd in the 'files' subdirectory with the following contents:

Code:

#!/sbin/runscript
# Copyright 1999-2003 Gentoo Technologies, Inc.
# Distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License, v2 or later

depend()
{
   need net
}

start()
{
   ebegin "Starting lircd"
   start-stop-daemon --start --quiet --exec /usr/sbin/lircd -- -d /dev/lirc/lirc0
   eend $?
}

stop()
{
   ebegin "Stopping lircd"
   start-stop-daemon --stop --quiet --exec /usr/sbin/lircd
   eend $?
}

Now emerge lirc-cvs (and make sure you've already unmerged any old lirc installation, as lirc-cvs uses the same filenames) and that should be it.

One last note: I noticed that mplayer needed to be recompiled. Lirc support worked great when I started up mplayer, but after I closed the mplayer window lirc didn't work anymore. Nevertheless recompiling fixed it and I didn't notice this problem with other apps.

Okay, it looks like I got this working but I had to change

Code:
 ECVS_SERVER="cvs.lirc.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/lirc"

to

Code:
ECVS_SERVER="cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/lirc"

per
http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=5444

Edit: Hmm it dropped the binaries in /usr/local/(s)bin

Edit: had to revert it again to ebuild a second time, odd stuff. Also, I'm only getting:

Quote:
lircd 0.7.0pre1: there's no hardware I can use and no peers are specified

When lircd is run. Hmm. And /dev/lirc/lirc0 exists.

As I said: I'm not very experienced in making ebuilds and I'm not sure if this is right or wrong. At least it works for me.

Hmm, seems to be related to lircd then.
Maybe their CVS is not always fully working. My CVS snapshot is already a week old.

As I tried to upgrade my kernel to mm6 I received the following error:

Code:

  CC      drivers/char/lirc/lirc_dev.o
drivers/char/lirc/lirc_dev.c: In function `irctl_open':
drivers/char/lirc/lirc_dev.c:402: request for member `value' in something not a structure or union

drivers/char/lirc/lirc_dev.c: In function `irctl_close':

make[2]: *** [drivers/char/lirc] Error 2
make[1]: *** [drivers/char] Error 2
make: *** [drivers] Error 2

It seems as if the patch needs a patch:
To get it work with the 2.6-test4-mm6 kernel open the patch file with a text editor and replace all occurences of "i_rdev.value" with "i_rdev" (without the apostrophes).

Now it will compile without errors.

I'm trying to get this to work with 2.6-test6-mm1 but when I compile the kernel I get :
Code:
  CC      drivers/char/lirc/lirc_dev.o
drivers/char/lirc/lirc_dev.c: In function `lirc_thread':
drivers/char/lirc/lirc_dev.c:142: structure has no member named `pgrp'
drivers/char/lirc/lirc_dev.c:143: structure has no member named `euid'
make[3]: *** [drivers/char/lirc/lirc_dev.o] Error 1
make[2]: *** [drivers/char/lirc] Error 2
make[1]: *** [drivers/char] Error 2
make: *** [drivers] Error 2

commenting out line 142 and 143 in the lirc_dev.c file enables me to compile the module, but then when I try to modprobe it, it complains about the settings :
Code:
lirc_serial: Unknown parameter `irq4'

does anybody have an idea ??

cheers

When I do this:
Code:
patch -p0 <patch-lirc-20030806.diff

it says
Code:
Hunk #1 FAILED at 7.
1 out of 1 hunk FAILED -- saving rejects to file linux-2.6.0-test2/drivers/char/Makefile.rej

The Linux InfraRed Controller option is in the kernel but no matter if I pick module or built-in it completely skips over that during the kernel compile. What gives?

This is a bit out of date, the newest patches are available on the LIRC list at sourceforge...

Updated patch for test9: https://profilo.dyndns.org/lirc/ esp. if you were getting build errors. it seemed to clear them up for me on mm4.

OLD PATCH:
http://www.held.org.il/patches/patch-lirc-2.6.0-test9-oh.diff.bz2

Code:
lircd -H something

i only get the null driver. what a pity...

I was having the same problems with only the null driver being recognised. I have got it to work though :)

Unpack lirc-0.7pre2 and run:
Code:
./configure --with-driver=flyvideo

Replace flyvideo with whatever driver it is that you use. Then edit the Makefile that is created and find:
Code:
SUBDIRS = drivers daemons tools doc

Delete drivers from that line and lirc will build the daemons and tools with support for your particular driver but it won't attempt to build the actual kernel module. :D

hm. as i am using the 2.6 kernel, i have to use the lirc-cvs ebuild posted at the beginning, so i do not have any ./configure. do you have an idea what to do in my case?

I'm using 2.6.0_test9 as well. This is the link to the version I'm using http://lirc.sourceforge.net/software/snapshots/lirc-0.7.0pre2.tar.bz2

I might write an ebuild up for it if I get time.

BTW with cvs packages, run autogen.sh first which will create a configure script for you.

Here is a quick ebuild I made up that will compile the snapshot without the kernel drivers.

Code:
# Copyright 1999-2003 Gentoo Technologies, Inc.
# Distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License v2
# $Header: /home/cvsroot/gentoo-x86/app-misc/lirc/lirc-0.7.0_pre2.ebuild,v 1.3 2003/10/22 21:08:47 mholzer Exp $

inherit eutils

DESCRIPTION="LIRC is a package that allows you to decode and send infra-red \
        signals of many (but not all) commonly used remote controls."
HOMEPAGE="http://www.lirc.org"

SLOT="0"
LICENSE="GPL-2"
KEYWORDS="~x86"

DEPEND="virtual/linux-sources"

MY_P=${P/_/}

SRC_URI="http://lirc.sourceforge.net/software/snapshots/${MY_P}.tar.bz2"

S=${WORKDIR}/${MY_P}

src_unpack() {
        unpack ${A}
        cd ${S}
        sed     -i "s:-O2 -g:${CFLAGS}:" configure
        sed -i "s:-O2 -g:${CFLAGS}:" configure.in
}

src_compile() {
        ./configure \
                --host=${CHOST} \
                --prefix=/usr \
                --infodir=/usr/share/info \
                --mandir=/usr/share/man \
                --disable-manage-devices \

        emake -C tools || die
        emake -C doc || die
}

src_install() {

        make -C doc DESTDIR=${D} install || die
        exeinto /etc/init.d
        doexe ${FILESDIR}/lircd

        dohtml doc/html/*.html
}

Create app-misc/lirc and name it lirc-0.7.0_pre2-r1.ebuild
Create the files dir and create the init script that was posted above.

When running emerge do it like this:
Code:
LIRC_OPTS="--with-driver=flyvideo" emerge lirc

Replace flyvideo with whatever driver you are using.

well, i seem to be too stupid for this making work.
i compiled this as you suggested. lircd -H something shows me now that available driver is "default". i am using lirc_serial as kernel module for my homebrew receiver which is connected to /dev/ttyS0. i have made a symlink from /dev/lirc pointing to /dev/ttyS0. then i do

Code:
modprobe lirc_serial
modprobe 8250
setserial /dev/ttyS0 uart 16550

mode2 says it can't work with my receiver.
Code:
/etc/init.d/lircd start
starts just fine, but what next? if i fire up irw, it does nothing in the first place, second time it says: connection refused.
l
Code:
hal root # lsmod
Module                  Size  Used by
8250                   21408  0
serial_core            23680  1 8250
lirc_serial            11936  0
Code:
hal root # setserial /dev/ttyS0
/dev/ttyS0, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x03f8, IRQ: 4
Code:
less /etc/modules.d/lircd
alias char-major-61     lirc_serial
options lirc_serial irq=4 io=0x3f8]

irrecord doesn't work, too.

for reference i give my /usr/src/linux/.config:

you mean by
Code:
setserial/dev/ttyS0 uart none
?

then i get as reply to
Code:
setserial /dev/ttyS0
/dev/ttyS0, UART: unknown, Port: 0x03f8, IRQ: 4

and it doesn't work as well. note the UART: unknown part.

no, unfortunately not...

i really don't know what i am doing wrong. i believe it might be a very minor problem, as the log say:
Quote:
00)
Nov 16 04:25:23 hal lirc_serial: auto-detected active low receiver
Nov 16 04:25:23 hal lirc_dev: lirc_register_plugin:sample_rate: 0

when i load lirc_serial. for me this seems to indicate that there is the receiver, it is correctly detected and i am just unable to use it. or am i misinterpreting my logs?

when i do
Quote:
modprobe 8250

and look into my logs, i see:
Quote:
Nov 16 04:27:52 hal Serial: 8250/16550 driver $Revision: 1.90 $ 8 ports, IRQ sharing disabled

I can't seem to get lircd to fire off. What am I doing wrong?
I deleted /dev/lirc and re-created it mkdir /dev/lirc. Still no go :(

igloo lirc # lircd -n -d /dev/lirc/lirc0
lircd 0.7.0pre2: lircd(hauppauge) ready
lircd 0.7.0pre2: accepted new client on /dev/lircd
lircd 0.7.0pre2: could not open /dev/lirc/lirc0
lircd 0.7.0pre2: default_init(): Is a directory
lircd 0.7.0pre2: caught signal
Terminated

The I deleted /dev/lirc, and just made it again with mkdir /dev/lirc

igloo lirc # lircd -n -d /dev/lirc/lirc0
lircd 0.7.0pre2: lircd(hauppauge) ready
lircd 0.7.0pre2: accepted new client on /dev/lircd
lircd 0.7.0pre2: could not get file information for /dev/lirc/lirc0
lircd 0.7.0pre2: default_init(): No such file or directory
