I'm trying to upgrade some software on a gentoo server. I'm new to gentoo so I read the relevant parts of the handbook, but things aren't working right. After running
Code:
emerge --sync
it tells me that there is a new version of portage and I should upgrade it. So I ran
Code:
emerge -u portage
and learned that my profile is deprecated and I should update it. So I ran
Code:
eselect profile list
and
Code:
eselect profile set 4
(which is the default x86 2008.0 server). But now when i run emerge -u portage it says "ARCH is not set".

/etc/make.profile is a symlink to /usr/portage/profiles/default/linux/x86/2008.0/server:

Code:

# ls -l /etc/make.profile
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 53 Jul  6 13:24 /etc/make.profile -> /usr/portage/profiles/default/linux/x86/2008.0/server

What do I need to do to get emerge working again?

** Before all this madness, my profile used to be /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2007.0

jinzougen,

Welcome to Gentoo.

You need to do
Code:
source /etc/profile
to make the new profile be used, or open a new shell.

I did that, but it didn't help.

First I logged out and back in, then after it didn't work I specifically ran "source /etc/profile". Still the same error.

Did you update the environment variable settings first?
Code:
env-update
source /etc/profile
If that is not the problem, please post the output of emerge --info (if it has more to say than "ARCH is not set").

jinzougen,

Your profile is set to
Code:
default/linux/x86/2008.0
thats the bare metal 2008.0 profile with almost nothing preset for you.
Thats not wrong but you will have a to set most of your own USE flags.
Your profile looks to be set ok.

You have a very old install. Updating it will be an interesting intellectual challenge but will take longer then a new install.

Please follow the manual update guide to get a modern portage version. Portage-2.1.6.13 is the current stable one, so use that instead of 2.1.1. Depending on how much you intend to update, the gcc upgrading guide is a recommended read. Then there's the whole expat-2 hell and probably a few other gotcha's. Loads of fun. :)

So you guys recommend just a fresh install of the newest version?

Since you're not too familiar with Gentoo yet, that would be the easier route. Some of the updates that await you are challenging for a novice--that is to say, much easier after you develop that "sixth sense" that warns of impending Gentoo doom, so that you notice where extra care is needed (before it's too late).

Three years without updates is a very long time in Gentoo land. If you only want to update one or two packages, you may get away with just doing the manual update of portage and then carefully examining the dependicies of the packages you want to update to see if you can get away with using --nodeps.

There are stage3 tarballs built on a weekly basis on a mirror near you.
