PostPosted: Sun Jul 05, 2009 4:11 am    Post subject: No Keyboard in X Reply with quote

I just updated and am attempting to login to GDM and I get no keyboard. I tried coping in some fdi files based on this: http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/desktop/x/x11/xorg-server-1.5-upgrade-guide.xml and the keyboard and touchpad both go nuts. (IE I hit capslock and it hits some random letters a/o numbers into the login in dialogue. It is completely unusable. ) I am also unable to switch to a tty so I am currently editing in a gentoo livecd.

does /etc/make.conf have INPUT_DEVICES="evdev" ?
does the kernel configuration have <*> Event interface under input devices ?

If you resist going the evdev route https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=251093 discussions may help.

(Sorry if this is not as neat as usual. I am forced to open it with notepad in windows that doesn't recognize the formatting that linux picks up automatically)

your file seems wrong, try this:
Code:
<match key="info.product" contains="keyboard">
     <merge key="input.xkb.model" type="string">evdev</merge>
</match>

instead of this:
Code:
<merge key="input.x11_driver" type="string">keyboard</merge>
<match key="/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer:system.kernel.name" string="Linux">
     <merge key="input.x11_driver" type="string">evdev</merge>
</match>

To make things short:
in nearly all usecases here,
Code:

<merge key="input.x11_driver" type="string">keyboard</merge>
<match key="/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer:system.kernel.name" string="Linux">
     <merge key="input.x11_driver" type="string">evdev</merge>
</match>

is over-engineering. Cause this simply checks if you're using Linux.
If you're on Gentoo, then unless it's Gentoo/BSD, it will be Linux.
The point of this check is simply that xorg-server is not Linux-only,
while /dev/input/eventX interface is, so evdev driver is Linux only.

Hi, can you try that.

Start your Xorg-Server without any /etc/X11/xorg.conf

If it's start, then you will endup with a US keyboard but we will know that you have a configuration problem too :P

I updated my file and it is still doing the same thing.
Here is my new 10-x11-input.fd1:
Code:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>

I didn't see a response to this question asked above:
Quote:
does the kernel configuration have <*> Event interface under input devices ?

Also, did you emerge the drivers x11-drivers/xf86-input-evdev and x11-drivers/xf86-input-synaptics?

Do you mean event interface under input devices in the kernel? If so, then yes, that is enabled.

My qlist -I x11-drivers:
Code:

x11-drivers/ati-drivers
x11-drivers/xf86-input-evdev
x11-drivers/xf86-input-keyboard
x11-drivers/xf86-input-mouse
x11-drivers/xf86-input-synaptics
x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati
x11-drivers/xf86-video-radeonhd
x11-drivers/xf86-video-vesa

I searched for the 2 xf86 and both are install w/ that latest version available.

I also tried booting w/o an xorg.conf file and it is doing the same thing it was doing with one.

I think I figured out how to break them up but still do not know what to name them.
Here they are with there current names:
mouse.fdi:
Code:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
<deviceinfo version="0.2">
  <device>
    <!-- FIXME: Support tablets too. -->
    <match key="info.capabilities" contains="input.mouse">
      <merge key="input.x11_driver" type="string">mouse</merge>
      <match key="/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer:system.kernel.name"
             string="Linux">
        <merge key="input.x11_driver" type="string">evdev</merge>
      </match>
    </match>
     </device>
</deviceinfo>

keyboard.fdi
Code:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
<deviceinfo version="0.2">
  <device>
<match key="info.capabilities" contains="input.keys">
      <!-- If we're using Linux, we use evdev by default (falling back to
           keyboard otherwise). -->
     <match key="info.product" contains="keyboard">
     <merge key="input.xkb.model" type="string">evdev</merge>
</match>
      </match>
    </match>
  </device>
</deviceinfo>

synaptics.fdi
Code:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
<deviceinfo version="0.2">
  <device>
    <match key="info.capabilities" contains="input.touchpad">
      <merge key="input.x11_driver" type="string">mouse</merge>
      <match key="/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer:system.kernel.name"
             string="Linux">
        <merge key="input.x11_driver" type="string">evdev</merge>
      </match>
    </match>
     </device>
</deviceinfo>

Please let me know what to name them and if I split them up correctly.

mouse.fdi isn't needed.
11-x11-synaptics.fdi and 10-x11-input.fdi

damoncf: As you can see, your post was truncated--there is an upper limit on post size. Please use a pastebin site to share huge logs or configs, and post only a link here. Thanks.
