It looks like a problem with multilib... but on another system which is almost identical it emerged fine. I use essentially the same make.conf except for -march and -mtune.

Have you tried it with FEATURES="-distcc"?

I also had a question about this glibc update. My question is different enough from the original that I hope it's alright to ask it here.

I am upgrading from 2.8_p20080602-r1 to 2.9_p20081201-r2. For me, the compilation and installation went smoothly. I don't believe I need to do anything like "emerge --emptytree system" and "emerge --emptytree world" because this is just a minor version update (2.8 to 2.9 and not 2.8 to 3.0 or something). However, I am not 100% certain of that the way I would like to be. Can anyone advise? If you can also give an explanation as to why you say yes or no that would really be appreciated as it would help me to better understand this.

Silly me, I should have tried it in the first place! Thank you, it compiled fine now. :)

to causality: I have never done a complete emerge of all packages after upgrading glibc and I have never had any problems. You might miss a few features of the new glibc until you recompile them but it should work fine.

Thank you Selig. I also wanted to say that the high quality of these forums and the consistently rapid responses are truly impressive. Though my own posting may be quite modest, I am grateful to be able to participate in this. :D
