|

I am aware that some members of the community have decided to "go it alone" and there is an excellent thread (https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-709908-highlight-xen+kernel.html) for people who want newer Xen kernels than are currently supported in portage.
However, I would rather stick to official ebuilds. The most recent Xen kernel in portage appears to be 2.6.21.
Can users expect that eventually newer Xen kernels will be available in portage, or is Xen deprecated for KVM in the Gentoo world? |

The Xen developers are currently concentrating on getting Xen merged into the mainline kernel. It was hoped to have a large chunk of this done in 2.6.30, but this failed to happen.
You can keep an eye on progrss via various sites including:
- http://lwn.net/Kernel/ (You can view all articles except those from the current issue without subbing)
(and others I can't remember off the top of my head)
The last official xen kernel release was 2.6.18. 2.6.21 was a now abandonned effort ot forward port those old patches, and as such is completely unsupported (hence why it's masked)
I doubt we'll see any more patchset releases now - we'll just have to wait until it's all in the mainline kernel. |

Hi,
check out this thread about a user-patched xen kernel >=2.6.25 with ebuild: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-709908.html
I had a lot of issues with this kernel, so i switched to VMWare (no VT/SVM on that machine).
Good luck.

Thanks for the info AllenJB. I'll stick with what I have as its meeting my needs fairly nicely.
I'm only messing around at home, so I'm not worried about the fact that it is unsupported. |
