Hello all. I have downloaded the new 2009 minimal boot cd, and I downloaded all three new 2009 stages from http://funtoo.org/linux/gentoo/x86/gentoo-x86-2009.06.07/. Thing is, I can't find a handbook describing the proper steps from stage 1... In fact all the documentation I'm seeing is for the old 2008 isos.... Can any one help point me into the right direction? Does the new stage 3 include all other stages or something? This is my first time installing gentoo(and i'd like to start from stage1); thanks.

Fixed link (can't have whitespace in a URL). --timeBandit

Stage1 installs have been unsupported for several years. Use the stage3 you downloaded.

Hi,

And yes, installing from stage3 will "include" what was need for stage 1 and stage 2.

Regards,
Maxime

LOL, okay thanks. Out of curiosity, why are they unsupported?

Oh, I’m aware of that; I simply downloaded the Gentoo 2009 stage tarballs that were available from the funtoo site, I never said I was trying to install Funtoo. Thanks for all of your replies.

To save valuable resources for parts where they are needed more? :wink:

AFAIK, funtoo does not host an official Gentoo mirror. To wit:
funtoo.org wrote:
In a Nutshell: Freshly-built Gentoo Linux stable stages, optimized for your processor, built by Daniel Robbins using official Gentoo stable branch.
:x A little misleading: official tree (alone) does not an official Gentoo tarball make.

If you want to install Gentoo, use Gentoo tarballs and supported installation methods (i.e., Stage 3), lest you find yourself...
Moved from Installing Gentoo to Unsupported Software.

  1. You only need one stage tarball, not all three;
  2. Yes;
  3. All the more reason to start with the Real Deal until you gain some experience.
Use the resources provided to you by others, above. Welcome to Gentoo and good luck! :)

Stage1+2 are a waste of time!
