PostPosted: Sat Jun 20, 2009 6:10 am    Post subject: Xorg 1.6.1.901-r3 and Various Problems...[SOLVED ..sort of] Reply with quote

Well, 3 months ago or so I decided to update everything and that turned into a huge hassle with xorg simply not working at all. Before I updated, I had everything working great (including HW Acceleration), but after attempting to revert back to a working version of xorg and the appropriate drivers I never got HW acceleration working again.

Today, I decided to try again with Xorg 1.6.1.901-r3. Hardware acceleration now works, but I have brand new problems:

I have a laptop and use a dual monitor set-up at home. Before switching to Xorg 1.6.1.901-r3, the DPI would be differnt depending on whether I had a LCD plugged in a xorg startup or not. The fonts would be larger if a LCD wasn't plugged in and smaller if it was. My laptop has a special high resolution screen, so, I liked that it did this. Now, I get the big huge fonts when my LCD is plugged in, and they just are too big and look horrible on my LCD. Any advice on getting Xorg to automatically adjust the DPI like it use to when it starts?

The other issues involve my mouse: My mouse sensitivity has gone up even more than it already was, and I cannot tap on the pad to click anymore. The default settings were fine for me before, but that's no longer the case. However, because I can't tap to click, I have a feeling synaptics isn't even being used. Any idea on getting synaptics back and then a good documentation on configuring synaptics?

--------------------------------------------------
Here is some relevant information. One interesting thing to note is that if I use X -Configure, the file that it produces causes me to end up with a black screen when X starts and my mouse and keyboard do not work at all. This same thing happend when I used my old xorg.conf file. The only way I was able to get it to work is to use the xorg.conf file shown below or no xorg.conf file at all.

So, in a nutshell. What can I do to correct these problems, or is there a xorg-server I can downgrade to that should get everything working for me without all the hassle?

Looking in an old xorg log file before I updated something liek this would happen and the DPI would be changed appropriately (THIS ISNT HAPPENING NOW):
Code:

(II) intel(0): Output VGA using initial mode 1680x1050
(II) intel(0): Output LVDS using initial mode 1440x900
(II) intel(0): detected 512 kB GTT.

(==) intel(0): video overlay key set to 0x101fe
(==) intel(0): Using gamma correction (1.0, 1.0, 1.0)
(**) intel(0): Display dimensions: (470, 300) mm
(**) intel(0): DPI set to (168, 88)

Any help would be appreciated.

EDIT: Looking back at the DPI set originally and the DPI set now...they are identical :S Which seems weird because the fonts are definitely a lot bigger of my external LCD screen now :S

EDIT2: Starting X by doing X -dpi 168 presents me with two black screens (both screens are on), which I don't think is suspose to happen.
EDIT3: It turns out that doing startx -- -dpi 96 makes it so my dual monitor set up looks how it use to be. However, I'd like this to happen automatically like it use to, and since I don't want that setting for when I'm just using my laptop alone, I don't want to set it as the only DPI setting.
EDIT4: apparently I can now use xrandr --dpi 96 and could thus put it in my startup script that detects whether two monitors are connected or not. The only problem with this though is that my KDE desktop icons and kicker are not updated for the new DPI then. Either way, that is sort of a hackish work-arround to begin with.

I now have my touchpad working again :) It just involved a little messing with HAL's configuration and evdev.

As for my other problem, I still haven't found a solution to xorg not correctly detecting my DPI when I have my second monitor plugged in without setting it manually or via a script. The problem with setting it via a script though is that by the time the script runs, KDE has already started, so the fonts for kicker and my desktop are way too big. Further more, if I try to restart kdesktop by killing it and starting it again...it doesn't always work and it also slows down my boot to begin with.

EDIT:

Well, I never found a true solution, but now I just have xorg starting up with --dpi 96 and in the end...things are better off. When using a dpi of 96 with just my laptop screen without the second monitor plugged in...I actually like the smaller fonts a whole lot more, and things look a little more crisp. So...its not the best solution, but...things are better off ultimately. :) I'll mark this as solved...even though it really wasn't.
