Posted: Thu Jul 11, 2002 4:07 pm Post subject: 2 Questions Regarding Web Browser Portage and Fluxbox |
|
|
On my system I only have Fluxbox installed as my window enviornment. I do not have kde nor do I want it, however I would like Konqueror. When I did a search for konqueror
emerge search konqueror
[ Results for search key : konqueror ]
[ Applications found : 1 ]
* net-www/konqueror-embedded [ Masked ]
I can't emerge it. I would like to get it on my system but I do not want to screw up my portage. Anyone know how it can be done WITHOUT emerging kde?
Question 2. Why is Mozilla on the portage tree still 1.0 r2? 1.0 full is out. The bleeding edge install is in 1.1a alpha already. My question is this. Can I install mozilla from the portage tree (has some features in my use options that I need) and then go and install mozilla 1.0 full or higher over that? meaning using the same paths and having it overwrite the previous version or will that royally fsck things?
Thanks in advance..... _________________ Boricua Hasta La Muerte |

the r in 1.0-r2 stands for revision 2. It is 1.0 full. |

r2 is not the same thing as rc2 (release candidate). The mozilla ebuilds are, in order:
mozilla-1.0
mozilla-1.0-r1
mozilla-1.0-r2
mozilla-1.0-r3 (currently masked because of gcc3.1 issues)
All of those are full 1.0 releases, but with perhaps some patches or configuration changes (prettier fonts, etc), or whatnot. You can look at /usr/portage/net-www/mozilla/ChangeLog to see the progression and differences between ebuilds. |

Thank you for straightening out my Mozilla question. I missed that it was r not rc
As for Konqueror, anyone have any ideas? _________________ Boricua Hasta La Muerte |

To get Konqueror if I emerge Qt and kdelibs do you think Konqueor will then be unmasked? Will it come as part of the kdelibs? With those installed can I then grab the konq source and install from there?
Thanks in advance!! _________________ Boricua Hasta La Muerte |

For Konqueror, you will most probably want to install "kdenetwork".
This is the part where Debian packaging is still superiour, they have (or had) fine grained packages like "konqueror", "kmail", etc. But this is probably more of a KDE problem... They like to distribute everything together because it makes installation (of the whole thing) easier. |

Konqueror-embedded is a stripped down version of Konqueror for Qt-embedded (runs on framebuffer) btw. I once did a modified version of Konq-embedded for Xfree, that was only using Qt and was incredible fast. =) But it wasn't very stable. I called it "Netraider". |

Sorry, I'm stupid. Of course Konqueror is the filemanager of KDE and not just the webbrowser, so it will much more probably be part of kdebase instead of kdenetwork. :/ Again, sorry for that. But when you have emerge kdenetwork, you should be able to emerge kdebase without further additional packages (at least not much) so the only package you had emerged too much would be kdenetwork.
I will emerge kdebase now to make sure that I'm not misleading you again. =) |

Yes, kdebase is the right package. |

Thanks again for the help I needed some of the packages in kdenetwork anyways. Total compile time was 2 hours as opposed to 10 hours for the whole kde kit n kaboodle. _________________ Boricua Hasta La Muerte |
