Having some serious trouble getting this to work.

This is a fresh gentoo install. At first, with 2.6.28 when starting X I would get this error.

intel: Failed to pin back buffer: cannot allocate memory.

And X would die. Adding the option NoAccel would start X, but not useable at all. I tried using ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~x86 and getting the latest xf86-video-intel (2.7.1) (, libdrm, and mesa. I did get X to start, but would lock up right away.

So after searching around, saw to use 2.6.27. Now X starts, but hangs for a few seconds before. The error I am getting now is

AIGLX error: drmmap of framebuffer failed (Invalid Argument) Reverting to software rendering.

I removed the ACCEPT_KEYWORDS and recompiled the current stable xf86-video-intel, libdrm, mesa, and xorg-server. Same. Even did an emerge -e world to rebuild the whole system just to be sure.

I tried to mask the current xf86-video-intel (2.6.3-r1) to try older versions, but can't get any of them to compile.

Even tried 2.6.26 kernel.

Have been going at this for the past 3 days now. There are massive amounts of info on the net about these bugs, but can't seem to find a definite fix. If anyone can help me out, would be greatful.

EDIT: Also, don't have any kind of framebuffer enable in the kernel. And here is my Xorg.log file.

Code:

localhost ~ # cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Since then, have done a few things. Seem to be on the right track (probably not). Saw that people have been putting

option "Legacy3D" "false"
option "AccelMethod" "uxa"

Tried, this and only with Legacy3D, the sever doesn't hang but still no dri. With both, the server doesnt even start. So open unmasked xorg-xserver, and keywords for xf86-video-intel, libdrm, xorg-server, and mesa to get xorg-server 1.6.

On 2.6.28 - Xserver starts, but locks. Have to hit power.

On 2.6.27 - The server seems to start, but screen dies. Hit power button. Now here is that Xlog. This is with intel 2.7.1 and xorg-server-1.6.1.901-r3. Seems like dri and uxa is getting enabled, but screen goes blank. Taking the uxa option out lets server start with software rendering.

Code:

localhost ~ # cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old

This is a pre-release version of the X server from The X.Org Foundation.
It is not supported in any way.
Bugs may be filed in the bugzilla at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/.
Select the "xorg" product for bugs you find in this release.
Before reporting bugs in pre-release versions please check the
latest version in the X.Org Foundation git repository.

Hi, you use the Xorg-Server 1.5, but you use the old method.

So, you should have this inside your /etc/make.conf :

Code:

INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse evdev"

And because of that, you should run this :

Code:

# emerge -auDNv world

After doing that, your /etc/X11/xorg.conf should be like this :

Code:

Section "ServerLayout"
        Identifier     "X.org Configured"
        Screen         0  "Screen0"
        Option "DontZap" "off"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
        Identifier   "Monitor0"
        HorizSync    31-96
        VertRefresh  55-110
        Option "DPMS"
EndSection

Section "Device"
        Identifier  "Card0"
        Driver      "intel"
        VendorName  "Intel Corporation"
        BoardName   "82865G Integrated Graphics Controller"
        BusID       "PCI:0:2:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Screen0"
        Device     "Card0"
        Monitor    "Monitor0"
        DefaultDepth    24
EndSection

Also, make sure that hald is at the default level too.

Have tried new kernels with KMS, various combinations of intel, mesa, libdrm, xorg-server. Was able to get intel-2.4.3 compiled by downgrading libdrm and mesa.

The best combination that I have hopes for is the latest kernel, latest intel, mesa, libdrm, and latest xorg-server. X starts up, but locks up within seconds. Have to hit the power button, but when looking back at the log, dri seems to have been enabled.

If anyone has 865G integrated graphics card with dri working, what versions of everything are you using?

Thanks.

By latest you mean:
- kernel 2.6.30_rc7
- mesa 7.5_rc2
- xorg-server 1.6.1.901-r3
- intel 2.7.1
- libdrm 2.4.11
right? (just checking)

Didn't know the hal had anything to do with graphics, but it is enabled now. Took out the AutoAddDevices. Hald started by default.

And yes, those are all the versions I have tried (among others).

Nobody has a 865G integrated graphics working with DRI?

Got DRI working.

Intel 2.4.3 and all the stuff required for it which was an older libdrm, which needed an older mesa, which needed an older dri2proto.

What a nightmare this was. Thanks for the suggestion on the hal. The first time I tried 2.4.3 didn't have hal on, which is why it didn't work.

On 2.6.27.12 now, gonna see if the later kernels will work.

The only thing that concerns me is that I will be stuck on this driver forever and won't be able to update. Won't be a big deal for some time, but sure hope intel devs take care of it. Ubuntu has a specific howto for reverting back to the 2.4 series of the intel driver, so obviously a known issue.

Thanks again.

Any kernel works. As long as KMS isn't activated on the newer ones.

KMS is a nightmare in itself since it seems to force an intel framebuffer on you.

Which versions of libdrm and dri2proto? Trying to install the 2.4.3 intel driver did not force a downgrade of those, and it obviously doesn't compile either.

Since then I have intstalled FreeBSD on that computer. The strange thing is that FreeBSD worked right out of the box with xorg 1.6 and intel driver 1.7.1.

Have been meaning to try linux again and got around to it finally yesterday. Ended up trying every combination probably possible. With xorg 1.6+ and intel 1.7+ and uxa, X starts, but moving the window produces strange artifacts and eventually will lock X up.

Here is what versions I'm using now though. Didn't seem to have to mess around with dri2proto this time around. But the rest required various masks and ~x86 keywords to get them to emerge.

x11-libs/libdrm-2.3.1
x11-proto/dri2proto-1.99.3
media-libs/mesa-7.2
x11-base/xorg-server-1.5.3-r6

2.6.30 seems to be a step in the right direction.

Able to get X started with xorg-server 1.6+, and intel 2.7.1. But from there, it is very unstable. It can lock within a minute, or within a couple of hours. And there is really nothing that stands out as to what is causing it. Tried with and without KMS, exa, uxa, etc. The reason I say 2.6.30 is making progress is 2.6.29 and 2.6.28 start up X with completely distorted graphics. Green lines all over the screen, moving a window will leave a wireframe window or trails, until it eventualy locks. 2.6.30 looks perfect visually.

There seems to be some kind of conflict between the kernel side of drm and any intel driver from 2.5 or newer with the 865G.

The purpose of this post is to hopefully find some people using gentoo and 865G. What version of xorg-server and intel driver are you using? There has to be some way to be able to get the newer xorg and intel drivers working.

Thanks.

I am one of the unfortunate users in the same situation as you. I did try all of the combinations you mentioned below, right now on the gentoo-sources-2.6.30-r1 kernel, but nothing works so far. I will try out things every time there is a new kernel, xorg, intel driver or libdrm version.

Right now I'm running on the setup you recommended before, intel 2.4.3 with DRI working. Before that I was using 2.7.1 with DRI disabled.

I had the same problems using 2.6.30-r1 with KMS enabled. Xorg-server would run fine without any errors or lockups but both Xfce4 and Kde-4.2.4 would both freeze the system immediately when resizing windows or loading web pages on firefox. I finally got a working solution by disabling KMS in the kernel and using EXA as acceleration in xorg.conf. DRI is enabled (not dri2 though as this only works in UXA). The working device section in xorg.conf is the following:
Code:

    Driver       "intel"
    Option       "AccelMethod" "EXA"
    Option       "Tiling"  "false"
    Option       "MigrationHeuristic"  "greedy"
    Option       "ExaOptimizeMigration"   "true"

I am using:
x11-base/xorg-server-1.6.1.901-r3
media-libs/mesa-7.5_rc3 (from layman/x11 overlay)
x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.7.1
x11-proto/dri2proto-2.1
x11-libs/libdrm-2.4.11

I don't have a solid solution yet, but I wanted to chime in, to get more info into the discussion, so hopefully we can all learn and find settings and versions that will work.

lspci reports that my video device is:
Code:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)

I previously was running the 2.6.28 kernel for many months, with the only issues being: 1) I couldn't ever change VTs. That meant I couldn't switch to the TTY console, or log out, or gracefully reboot, etc. 2) Scrolling and redrawing (e.g. in Konsole) would be abysmal if currently available system RAM was running low.

This week, I tried to attack the problem again, to try to get to 2.6.30. (The obstacle there for me was Atheros wireless drivers, but that's another story.) Long story short, I have something relatively stable, but have twice now encountered freezeup of X, where no keyboard input is accepted, and nothing new is redrawn on screen -- EXCEPT I can move the mouse and see the mouse pointer moving around. In this condition, I am able to use the Magic SysRq key to engage "REISUB".

Although I've been messing around with several settings, my current xorg.conf is as follows:
Quote:

Section "Device"
#Option "NoAccel" "on" # [<bool>]
#Option "DRI" # [<bool>]
#Option "RenderAccel" "on"
Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"
Option "Legacy3D" "off"

Identifier "Card0"
EndSection

That configuration will work with 2.6.28 as well, but xorg under 2.6.30 will refuse to start without the Legacy3D option set to off.

These are the versions of some relevant packages:
Quote:

x11-libs/libdrm-2.4.13
x11-proto/dri2proto-1.99.3
media-libs/mesa-7.3-r1
x11-base/xorg-server-1.5.3-r6
x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.6.3-r1

Hope this helps us get solid, performant X with Intel graphics hardware. :\

Anyone recently tried using Git versions of mesa, xorg-server, dri2proto, and the intel driver on this chipset? Are things improving (UXA and DRI2 stabilization)?
