The machine in question is a laptop that I don't plan on using as a "hi-fi gateway". I just want to connect from it to my home server which is connected to nice audio hardware.
What are the pros and cons of both ways? |

mpd is ideal for such applications.
Just install media-sound/mpd on the server and a client like media-sound/sonata on the laptop |

Thanks, but I've been using mpd with ario for some time now. With pulseaudio I can supposedly play anything from my laptop without plugging it to the amplifier (supposedly because the server is now busy doing emerge -e world with a new gcc...so pulseaudio has to wait...). |
