Those are the last three lines of /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf, but I have the identical configuration file on other machines without any problems.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

Maybe a dumb question, but does ~/.mplayer exist, and if so is the error coming from there? |

Yes.
I looked at this more closely, and it seems that something went wrong in building mplayer. I really don't know much about portage, but i would guess that (since I had a lot of updates), there were (perhaps) some dependencies that got built out of order (or the ongoing sdl/directfb fiasco).
Anyway, I re-emerged mplayer (after rebuilding all of the dependencies again), and the problem seems to have gone away. |
