As I understood it, reiserfs is atm undergoing a lot of changes due to the effort of killing the Big Kernel Lock. That will make it a tad faster but more importantly, still maintainable in the future.
Now, despite a flow of dmesg warnings (and 'mini panics' of the kernel starting with rc3) I was still able to boot (though not using) 2.6.30 kernels on reiserfs until about 2.6.30-rc5, where reiserfs partitions aren't mountable anymore.
Right now reiserfs users can only stay away from 2.6.30, and considering the huge changes being applied to the FS code, paranoid ones should probably wait a few kernel revisions more before thinking of an upgrade. _________________ backend.cpp:92:2: warning: #warning TODO - this error message is about as useful as a cooling unit in the arctic

| for me these problems with reiserfs were fixed in rc6, although my / isn't reiserfs, just /usr/portage |

man - reiserfs WAS the most stable and secure filesystem on linux previously (for me) and now they're screwing everything up only for 4-10% more speed and removing the BKL ?
great - that way I could also migrate to XFS
and Reiser4 is still NOT in the kernel |
That's no good for me
Those were my filesystems of choice for a very long time...
I almost forgot about ext & co stuff... and now they want to kill reiserfs not mentionig reiser4... _________________ linux-2.6.17 +ck +R4 +lockless +genetic-as +... więcej nie pamiętam

I'm already thinking of moving over to another fs, as KMS and DRM improvements are quite important to me and my i915 chip... _________________ backend.cpp:92:2: warning: #warning TODO - this error message is about as useful as a cooling unit in the arctic |

Have you looked into dmesg / do you watch kernel messages during startup?
Also, what would be a good replacement for reiserfs (at least on /)? _________________ backend.cpp:92:2: warning: #warning TODO - this error message is about as useful as a cooling unit in the arctic |

good replacement should be ext4 though i love reiser4. but then reiser4 isn't
in kernel so it depends on patches. zen-sources(great set) has in kernel reiser4
but again you'll have to depend on zen-sources.
at present i'd go with ext4. _________________ this is a strange strange world. |

I think a good replacement will be btrfs. But not now. _________________ Anyway it's all the same at the end...

I would have gone the ext4 route already hadn't there been the data loss afair several weeks ago. What's the current state there?
Maybe it's time for some fs tinkering again... thinking of giving btrfs a chance on /usr/portage
reiser4 not in mainline kernel is also holding me off right now. What's the current state of it? Are there well-tested official upstream patches that will definitely work with 2.6.30* and reiser4progs, that I could include into my own kernel patchset? Last time I checked, which was several months ago, reiser4 seemed to be in a rather sorry state with different patches floating around working only with specific versions of reiser4progs etc... _________________ backend.cpp:92:2: warning: #warning TODO - this error message is about as useful as a cooling unit in the arctic |

tested btrfs with portage but after a while went back to reiser4. percieved performance after some was an issue to me.
ext4 data loss has been fixed and according to phoronix benchmarks beats most fs in most cases.
well reiser4 patches are at 2.6.29 unless you ask the zen-sources guys for broken out patches for their most recent zen-sources.
personally am thinking of going ext4 for / and keeping reiser4 for portage. _________________ this is a strange strange world. |

You can find the latest stable patches here: http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/edward/reiser4/reiser4-for-2.6/
I've been using reiser4 on / for the past few years and have found it to be very stable and fast. I ran into a small problem with reiser4progs in the beginning, but all that has been fixed. I just use zen-sources because they always have the latest reiser4 patches and a few others like Linux-PHC that I use. _________________ 2.6.34-rc3 on x86_64 w/ paludis

Hey !
great news !

Use the latest -mm kernel, or patch against vanilla kernel:
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/edward/reiser4/reiser4-for-2.6/
Report, if any problems.

There are some technical/organization issues
to be resolved before inclusion. Not now.
May be in Aug/Sept.
Thanks,
Edward.

Yes, all work ok, but when I booted first time rc6 I saw kernel oops, lot of spam on screen and info about problem with remunt rootfs as rw, after disabling kms (i915.modeset=0) work ok. _________________ github |

I have installed rc6-r5 now and it finally works again. It seems the latest reiserfs fixes from 2 days ago did it. No dmesg overflow with xattr messages (I have xattr disabled, my issues might have arisen of that), no panic at startup.
Maaybe I'll do some backupping now nonetheless.
@SlashBeast: Setting i915.modeset=0 doesn't really seem to be a viable reiserfs fixup. You must have changed something in addition to get it working.
EDIT: Just to make the changes being made to reiserfs visible: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux%2Fkernel%2Fgit%2Ftorvalds%2Flinux-2.6.git&a=search&h=279e677faa775ad16e75c32e1bf4a37f8158bc61&st=commit&s=reiserfs
Also: The really big changes concerning the removal of BKL will only arrive after 2.6.30 which just got updated to the recent state of reiserfs in OpenSuse, patches from Jeff Mahoney. So, once the big BKL fun begins, we may have already reiserfs4 in-kernel working on our patitions. _________________ backend.cpp:92:2: warning: #warning TODO - this error message is about as useful as a cooling unit in the arctic |

That has also been the case on my system - i have enabled reiserfs without extras ever since, and those problems were -xattrs related. But they have gone at least since git-sources-2.6.30_rc6-r5. _________________ backend.cpp:92:2: warning: #warning TODO - this error message is about as useful as a cooling unit in the arctic |

Reiser4 in mainline kernel! w00t
Sweeeeeeet. I hope we can get large file performance fixed. Well not really that, but deletion performance. I cannot delete anythign faster than reading my disks at 10MiB/sec _________________ Atlas (HDTV PVR, HTTP & Media server)

now my data is on ext4 and i feel they're very safe.
tried reiser4 on root but couldn't get it to boot. googled hard but all the
proposed options didn't work; 'fsck -A -a' and 'fsck -a' etc'
now i feel new. _________________ this is a strange strange world. |
