All,
I've come across a real pain in the butt poser. I have an HP HDX-9300 laptop. It uses the hda-intel sound system. I have sound playing from the line-out, the line-in and the headphone jack, but nothing coming from the laptop speakers. Nothing is muted. Here's the information

Code:

cat /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/model
hp-hdx,<NULL>,<NULL>,<NULL>,<NULL>,<NULL>,<NULL>,<NULL>

Code:

Ironically, the audio has only worked properly on Ubuntu 8.04. Ubuntu 8.10 and 9.04 as well as SUSE 11.0 / 11.1 also have the same problem as this genroo install. I have tried gentoo-sources and tuxonice kernels with no luck.

Umm help.. :-)

Long shot, but maybe in your /etc/modules.d/alsa you need add something like
Code:
option snd-hda-intel model=5stack
or 6stack
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa is part of alsa-utils

I couldn't find anything about that shared library error you get from alsamixer on unfortunately.
I don't have that file on my amd64 system:
Code:
$ ls -l /usr/lib64/alsa-lib/libasound_module_ctl_pulse.so
ls: cannot access /usr/lib64/alsa-lib/libasound_module_ctl_pulse.so: No such file or directory

Hi ShadowHawkBV. Hi have an HP dv2000 with snd-hda-intel. My laptop speaker is working properly so I could post here some audio/alsa related config. Maybe you find something that is missing from your config..

Here goes /etc/modprobe.d/alsa and output from lsmod:

/etc/modprobe.d/alsa:
Code:
# ALSA portion
alias char-major-116 snd
# OSS/Free portion
alias char-major-14 soundcore

# OSS/Free portion - card #1
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
##  OSS/Free portion - card #2
## alias sound-service-1-0 snd-mixer-oss
## alias sound-service-1-3 snd-pcm-oss
## alias sound-service-1-12 snd-pcm-oss

alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss
alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/midi snd-seq-oss

# Set this to the correct number of cards.
options snd cards_limit=1

lsmod:
Code:
noisebleed ~ # lsmod | grep snd
snd_hda_codec_conexant    18068  1
snd_hda_intel          21320  9
snd_hda_codec          52084  2 snd_hda_codec_conexant,snd_hda_intel
snd_pcm                63000  4 snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec
snd_timer              17628  3 snd_pcm
snd                    47844  19 snd_hda_codec_conexant,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_pcm,snd_timer
soundcore               6656  1 snd
snd_page_alloc          7900  2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm

If you need any more info feel free to ask

Well I tried that, and it left the same result. If I understand the alsa help file correctly, the 5 and 6 stack is for multiple speakers. (surround sound) On the off chance that the audio system in this HDX9300 was surround I tried. No change in where things played to.

The error in the alsaconf is a trifle concerning. especially since it's the same one from alsamixer. Must be a USE flag result, just not sure what.

Thanks for the assistance. I really think I just need to track down how the alsa system directs it's output and redirect them to the correct ports. Too bad I have not the foggiest how to accomplish that.

To see plausible options for the "model" parameter to the kernel module, look here:

Code:
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/alsa/HD-Audio-Models.txt

I've tried every model that even remotely might apply to my system. 3stack, 5stack, laptop, laptop-hp, hp-m4, hp, ref, ref-no-jd. All with approximately the same results. Sound coming from the external jacks (With the line-out occasionally losing sound) and no sound from the speakers.

I'm going to try the alsa-driver package and see if it changes anything. It may have more recent cards then the 2.6.29-gentoo-r3 kernal.

Well the newest alsa-driver has some new HDA cards, but none that match(or work) any better then the kernal ones.

Is there a way to manually redirect the output to the speakers vice the output jacks?

Well I found a live CD that works properly. PCLinuxOS. Here's the relevant info from it.

Code:
cat /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/model
<NULL>,<NULL>,<NULL>,<NULL>,<NULL>,<NULL>,<NULL>,<NULL>

So no model is apparently needed.

Code:
cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#0

Unsurprisingly, the LiveCD has everything as a module in the kernel.

Code:
lsmod | grep snd
snd_hda_intel         360684  0

soundcore               7072  1 snd

PCLinux has snd_hwdep, snd_seq_dummy and snd_seq_midi_event. I'm thinking that snd_hwdep could be a possible cause, and I will try to add this mod to my Gentoo modules.

Code:
uname -a
Linux localhost 2.6.26.8.tex3 #1 SMP Mon Jan 12 04:33:38 CST 2009 i686 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU     T8100  @ 2.10GHz GNU/Linux

Could it be a kernal problem? Newer kernels have changed something integral to the successful operation of the snd_hda_intel driver? I'll also try an older kernel and see if that sorts the problem.

More to follow as I continue beating this machine with a large stick. If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Well It's more or less solved. kernel 2.6.26-r4 works fine. >=Kernel 2.6.28 do not work. I'll try out 2.6.27 and see if that will work, but I guess this makes it a bug to be submitted up.

Thanks for all the assistance.

The joys of Linux driver development! Good luck finding the patch/commit that creates this regression :)

Did you ever file a bug for this problem?

I am having the same thing with the same alsa module and would like to CC the bug.

Unfortunately for me, I haven't yet found a kernel version that will work.

I found something of a fix to this, but I don't understand why or how it works.

I installed vanilla-sources 2.6.32-rc3 and booted. The alsa module came up with the error that it did not recognize the hardware and was configuring in guess mode, whatever that means. The upshot was that it worked and I had sound through the speakers. However, my wireless card (realtek 8187) would not work. So, I booted back to gentoo-sources (2.6.31-r1) and I got the same error from alsa and the sound still worked. And my wireless card works too.

I don't know if this will work for anyone else, and I can't imagine why it worked in the first place, but it did and I am happy.
