/var/log/messages getting large

My file /var/log/messages is getting huge. It is using up 1.2G of disk space but I don't know how to reduce it.
Is it safe just to delete it?

You could delete it/cut it down to size.

Or emerge logrotate and let that keep it trimmed down for you.
