After a standard weekly:
Code: |
emerge --sync
emerge -uDN world
emerge --depclean
revdep-rebuild
|
I had to do a reboot for a shutdown. When I typed on the command line I got the following error: Code: |
Fatal server error:
No screen found
|
But I did not change anything and obviously my screen is still there.
Here is the output of /var/log/Xorg.0.log
http://pastebin.com/m206ec650
Let me know if you need anything else. _________________ Francois Castonguay,

This looks to be your problem. Try remerging your x11 drivers. This should tell you what:
Code: |
eix -ICc x11-drivers
|

Yikes. It looks like you have drivers for everything installed, which is not ... optimal, but I don't think it is your primary problem. Now you have to emerge those packages again, or at least the one for your hardware. We can get rid of the extraneous ones later if you want.
Code: |
eix -ICc x11-drivers | grep -v ^Found | awk '{print $2}' | xargs emerge -v1
|
will remerge all of those. If you know which is for your hardware, then
Code: |
emerge -av1 x11-drivers/my-driver
|
will suffice. If you want help trimming the drivers for hardware you don't have, post
Code: |
cat /etc/make.conf
lspci
|
|

Code: |
emerge -av1 xf86-input-evdev xf86-input-keyboard xf86-input-mouse xf86-video-ati xf86-video-vesa
|
X may start again after that. For optimal use, you want the radeon driver for your card (according to lspci). You will have to
Code: |
emerge -av xf86-video-radeonhd
|
The vesa driver is also a decent fallback, though performance will suffer. The ATI driver package may or may not work with your card, I just don't know. |

I emerge all of the above mentioned and startx does not work, but the errors are not the same.
Code: |
xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): Cannot register with ConsolKit: org.freedesktop.CkConector.Error: Unable to open session: Failed to conect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file or directory /root/.xinitrc: line 1: exec: startkde: not found

It looks like you're missing a few packages. I think your depclean may have borked your system somewhat. What does this show ?
Code: |
emerge -pv consolekit dbus hal xorg-server xorg-x11 kde-meta
|
This output will give me some idea of what is installed, and what may be missing. What window manager/desktop environment were you running ? I used kde in the example because it looks like X was trying to run startkde.
Also, please post your xorg.conf. May need to make changes there. I would also add the following line to make.conf
Code: |
INPUT_DEVICES="evdev"
VIDEO_CARDS="radeonhd vesa"
|

For some unknown reason the is no file /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I did not installed this system was simply asked to take over and take care of it. _________________ Francois Castonguay,
