I compiled the ralink rt2860 driver from the ralink website. I can load it with insmod rt2860sta.ko but i can't load it with modprobe rt2860sta, but i copied the file to /lib/modules/.../kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rt2x00/.
I want this to auto load the module at startup with modules.autoload. I tried update-modules but it didn't help me.

you may want to use a newer kernel. 2.6.30 will include a (staging) driver for this chip.
currently available is rc2, here is the changelog of rc1 that contains a description.
