My system: 2.6.27-gentoo-r8 #5 SMP Wed Apr 8 06:34:08 EDT 2009 x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor.

I just upgraded to the latest gcc, x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-4.3.2, rebuilt system with emerge -e system, also rebuilt world, ran emerge --depclean && revdep-rebuild, and now dbus doesn't start:
Code:

# /etc/init.d/dbus start
localmount
 * ERROR:  Some services needed are missing.  Run
 *         './dbus broken' for a list of those
 *         services.  dbus was not started.

The missing service reported by ./dbus broken is localmount, which is running:
Code:

# rc-status boot
Runlevel: boot
alsasound                                               [ started  ]
bootmisc                                                [ started  ]
checkfs                                                   [ started  ]
checkroot                                                [ started  ]
clock                                                       [ started  ]
consolefont                                              [ started  ]
hostname                                                [ started  ]
keymaps                                                 [ started  ]
localmount                                               [ started  ]
modules                                                   [ started  ]
net.lo                                                       [ started  ]
rmnologin                                                 [ started  ]
urandom                                                   [ started  ]

The version of dbus is the latest one, 1.2.3-r1. I found a post for the exact same problem, http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-707473-highlight-service+localmount+needed+dbus.html, and the suggestion was to downgrade dbus to the previous version, 1.1.20, but that didn't work.

Thanks in advance for any help.

this solution is kind of a hack, but you could remove localmount from the dependancies listed in dbus (and cross your fingers that it starts first, which it ought to do)

I thought of doing that after posting the message and it worked. Here's an error message I see at boot time:

Quote:
Caching service dependencies...
//lib64/splash/cache/depcache: line 6002: syntax error: unexpected of file
Can't find service 'localmount' needed by 'dbus': continuing...

Output of emerge --info follows.

Thanks for the replies!

emerge -av baselayout should fix that.

I had tried to reemerge the whole system (emerge -e system) after noticing the problem. I just tried to reemerge baselayout, with no success.

In any case, the work around of commenting out the dependency on localmount in /etc/init.d/dbus is working.

Should I submit a new entry in bugzilla for that problem?

Best regards.

No, you should fix it the right way. Try emerge -C baselayout && emerge -av baselayout. We'll go from there.

Blessed be!

I just tried those two commands, same result. I still see the following message at boot time
Quote:

Did you recompile your kernel(s) after you updated gcc? If not, do so. But first, move the .config file out of the kernel source directories. Then issue make mrproper. Move the .config back, and run make. Remove all directories from /lib64/modules. Then run make modules_install in the kernel source directory. This will get the kernel compiled properly. Also, if you could post /var/log/dmesg.

Blessed be!

I had recompiled the kernel but I was not aware of the mrproper target of the kernel makefile. I just went through all the steps in your message but unfortunately it didn't fix the problem.

Here's the content of /var/log/dmesg:

About all I have left in my arsenal is to remove /etc/init.d/localmount and emerge -av baselayout. Assuming you aren't working with baselayout-2/openrc, that should clear out the old localmount file, and refresh it. If that doesn't fix things, then I'm at a loss

You have something really weird going on, almost like a Frankensteining of baselayout. I've not seen this before.

Good luck.

Blessed be!

I'll give a try to your latest suggestion later this week. No big deal if it doesn't work because my Gentoo is perfectly usable as it is.

Thanks a lot for all the help.

If you do find a fix, please post it. I'd like to know what it is, academically speaking.

Blessed be!

Hi,

I had a similar issue with ext4 and the same errors in my system log.

I solved the issue by using a repair cd from seagate, the manufacturer. I was not able to repair the ext4 system with fsck manually.
I hope my error is now gone, it seems so, in one month I know details.

I had repaired the ext4 file system 3 times and each time after rebooting from cold boot, the system was in an state which was unable to boot. I covered the issue by using ubuntu from my second harddrive.

Bye

maybe we should be thinking about depscan.sh:

Quote:

Usage: depscan.sh [options]

Rebuild Gentoo init.d service dependency tree.

Options:
-d, --debug Turn on debug output
-s, --svcdir Specify svcdir (default: /var/lib/init.d)
-u, --update Force update even if mtimes are OK
-h, --help Show this help cruft

Quote:
emerge -av baselayout should fix that. [ ... + several messages ... ]

Perhaps we're barking up the wrong tree here. I suspect that this isn't baselayout's fault. I'm wondering how
this happens:
Quote:

Code:
 localmount | boot

Code:
localmount                                               [ started  ]

Code:

Caching service dependencies...
//lib64/splash/cache/depcache: line 6002: syntax error: unexpected of file
Can't find service 'localmount' needed by 'dbus': continuing...

I think you should run depscan.sh -d -u

No, this doesn't sound like quite the same thing to me. I don't believe kindofblue has had any filesystem troubles; rather, his service management system is a little confused.

Iif you have troubles with ext4, you might want to try rieser. I haven't looked at performance comparisons for some months, but I strongly recommend reiserfs - I've never had any problems with it (except when I put a loopback device file containing a reiser filesystem on another reiser filesystem, which is a terrible idea), it seems to perform well, and its treated me well upon unsafe power cycles that I have absolutely no concern about loosing data upon power loss.

I just helped someone else with a weird hal/dbus issue, so let's see if that works.

1) emerge -C dbus
2) delete the /etc/dbus-1 directory
3) emerge -av dbus.

EDIT: You might want to even emerge -C baselayout, delete all the files it installs, emerge -av baselayout. /EDIT

I figured this might have the same kind of root issue. It's worth a looksee.

Blessed be!

Thank you for your help.

My hole init system is crashed. I have ruined it by running fsck on a mounted partition. It was /.
So /etc/fstab is broken. /etc/init.d/termencoding not working and much more.

I did emerge -e system to rebuild as much as possible. Also alsa reports an error, which I didnt had in the past.

I am happy, that I was able to repair my gentoo box and now I am in my gentoo box.

I did get the same errors in the system log, but I admit that I had more troubles.

I have a somewhat similar problem.

When I run quodlibet I get this error:
Code:

ERROR:dbus.proxies:Introspect error on :1.0:/org/freedesktop/Hal/Manager: dbus.exceptions.DBusException: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.AccessDenied: Rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type="method_call", sender=":1.31" (uid=1000 pid=3961 comm="python /usr/bin/quodlibet ") interface="org.freedesktop.DBus.Introspectable" member="Introspect" error name="(unset)" requested_reply=0 destination=":1.0" (uid=0 pid=5905 comm="/usr/sbin/hald --use-syslog --verbose=no "))

I have now noticed an error relating to dbus during xorg startup:
Code:

[config/dbus] couldn't take over org.x.config: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.AccessDenied (Connection ":1.25" is not allowed to own the service "org.x.config.display0" due to security policies in the configuration file)

Are these related? I have dbus 1.2.12 and hal 0.5.12_rc1.

I have removed dbus/hal and removed the dbus/hal directories from /etc before reinstalling them. revdep-rebuild comes up clean. Trying to google that second error does not return anything that I can make any sense of.

Schizoid,

are you autostarting hal and dbus at boot time? It sure seems like you're not from the errors I see.

Blessed be!
Pappy
