|
|
I have quite a problem with my NIC during install.
I boot up from the CD fine and then insmod PCMCIA_core, i82365 and ds fine also.
The problem comes when i try to run 'cardmgr -f' . I get the following message then the system hangs - completely and totally. I need to do a hard reboot to get back in control.
cs memory probe 0xa0000000-0xa0ffffff:clean
cardmgr[186]: socket1: 3com 589 Ethernet: executing: `modprobe 3c589_cs`
cs IO port probe 0x0100-0x04ff: excluding 0x0280-0x02ff 0x0378-0x037f 0x03c0-0x03df 0x03f8-0x03ff 0x04d0-0x04d7
cs IO port probe 0x0380-0x03bf: clean
cs IO port probe 0x03e0-0x03f7: clean
cs IO port probe 0x0400-0x04cf: clean
cs IO port probe 0x04d8-0x04ff: clean
cs IO port probe 0x0800-0x08ff:
then it hangs.
I know the correct driver is the 3c589_cs and I have tried modprobing that manually. however, lsmod shows the driver to be unused.
When i installed Mandrake 8.1 on the same machine, I experienced a similar problem (system hanging when probing ethernet card), although the exact cause was masked by a gui. Mandrake 8.2 didn't seem to have this problem and I got 8.1 to work with the NIC after the initial install.
I have tried disabling the IrDA, the parallel port and taken out the mini-pci (win)modem. Nothing seems to work.
Does anybody have any insight into this problem and how to solve it? Any help at all would be much appreciated.
I am using a Dell I8100, PIII 933
many thanks

|

Henry:
This is an IO port problem with the pcmcia-cs card services manager. Edit the /etc/pcmcia/config.opts file and exclude the io address specifically for Inspiron 8xxx series laptops. See section 2.4 of the pcmcia-cs how-to at http://pcmcia-cs.sourceforge.net/. Ran into this problem playing with Slackware on my 8100 recently. Should be [exclude port 0x800-0x8ff]. Will allow the module to load. Notice the last line in the error message you posted???
Hope it helps.

And friend of mine and his Inspiron 8100 experienced the same problem with the 1.4_rc2 LiveCD. After doing what's been suggested in this thread, the "cardmgr -f" command still fails to load the module.
Says something like: autoconfig failed
Any ideas? |
