I am beginner in gentoo, so I am confused of that:"Even if you don't need to do these things now, you should go ahead and set up networking anyway." printed in installation instruction. There is a shortcut to this forum for the same case, but I did not find some usefull advice for the problem. Would somebody explayn me, what should I do to install Gentoo without networking at all or, at least, to install it with Windows-based LAN only.

There are a couple of different options available with the 1.4 release. The best thing for you would be to read the Gentoo Alternative Installation Guide (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/altinstall.xml). The process is a little more in depth as the Gentoo installation, under normal conditions, uses rsync, http, and ftp to synchronize the Portage tree and download new ebuilds to compile. Also, there is now a 2 CD Set called the Gentoo Reference Platform ("GRP") that contains many pre-compiled binaries of common applications (GNOME, KDE, Mozilla, OpenOffice, etc.) that can be burned to a CD and installed without a network connection. Please keep in mind that these packages may not be optimized for your system though; the network installation/compilation uses parameters specified during installation to specifically compile source optimized for your processor and platform architecture.

I'm assuming based on your description below that the "Windows-based LAN' does not have a route to the internet. Hopefully the information above helps. Thanks!

Mike
