I have forgotten to build a kernel with DEVFS support, after rebooting some script notified me and I redid the kernel config.

After recompiling I transfered bzImage to /boot/bzImage and rebooted

Again: No DEVFS detected...

This repeated about 3 times and I'm getting a bit frustrated...

How to correct my initial mistake? (please no reinstall.... takes ages)

Are you using Grub as your bootloader?
Did you edit /boot/grub/menu.lst to boot using the new kernel you compiled?
You may be simply booting with the original kernel, not the new one.

If you have a seperate boot partition, make sure it is mounted before copying bzImage to /boot.

Amen to that!

Also, to see what kernel you are running, run "uname -a".

I guess I didn't make sure it was mounted again.

When I noticed /boot/grub/ was gone I emerged sys-xxxx/grub en reinstalled it... You can guess if it worked ;)

Well... I started a new fresh install on both of my desktops now (both 1.2) and the fasted is now almost done (final phase, config files).

Thanks all and indeed: make sure it is mounted...
