The last time I used Gentoo was about 4 years ago. I Decided to get back into the mix of things since I'm doing more web development now than ever and I need a better/stable system than the one I'm using now (take a wild guess). I was a member on this forum as well but I can not remember my user name or password, so I signed up again.
I know its a bit much to ask but what have I missed in my 4 year absence? What are the most popular Desktop Environments around besides KDE and GNOME. Is fluxbox still around and being used thats the last one I used. Has there been any major changes to Portage? How is the installation process now compared to a few years ago any changes?
I'll be installing linux on my new system shortly and I'm quite excited and confident as to what Gentoo has in store for me.
Get me up to speed guys! |

Welcome back
Fluxbox is still in portage and is still used by at least me. There is also Openbox which is very similar. A recent clean, fast and smooth addition to desktop environments has been LXDE.
Portage has undergone any number of changes in the past four years, but just keeps on getting better and better.
One major change (albeit it still keyworded, but I'd highly recommend using it) is the switch to OpenRC which gives a system that boots (and shutsdown) far quicker.
Installation is still pretty much the same as far as I can remember.
Have fun,

LXDE looks quite nice BTW ! I've just realized it's (LXLauncher) what's installed on EEEPC (Xandros but still).
Nice catch, thanks for sharing that. _________________ Gentoo addict: tomorrow I quit, I promise!... Just one more emerge...

Fluxbox is nice (and still around). I prefer Openbox these days. You might want to have a look at the tiling window managers as well. I like dwm.

Gentoo now has weekly stages and Minimal CDs. See here. The Gentoo-based sysresccd is also quite popular.
The Gentoo homepage has a new look and "signs of life". |

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. I'm going to be checking out LXDE and XFCE and see which one suits my needs. |

Anybody knows a "click click installed" distribution that has LXDE as WM to install into a Virtual Box? Or an image?
