Define "fails". If there is an error message, post it. That's the only way to know what's happening with your system.
Blessed be!

Which drivers did you install? The 180.xx drivers should work for your card. |

If you tried the stable version try the ~x86 version. |

You could temporarily remove xdm from the default runlevel, and troubleshoot X from a place where you can see what's happening when X dies. At least then you'd know.
My experience is, as long as you have the /usr/src/linux symlink pointing to the kernel version you're using, that's all that needs to happen. I'm using whatever the latest 180.x version is, and it's working fine.
Blessed be!

any version, as long as the driver is from portage it will not work, I've tried all the ~amd64 versions and all the stable releases |

compilation is fine, gdm itself works, I can log in, but after that everything freezes.
I booted in interactive mode and stopped xdm from starting then ran startx, the screen had the same blue background and ctrl-alt-f* didn't work so I couldn't see the X output.
Im gonna try again after i recompile after changing some USE flags.
This next time I'll run startx >> somename.log and write the output here |

Either way... have you thought about upgrading to xorg-server-1.5.3? It will be going stable soon anyway, and might help you with your problem.
Here is the stabilization bug:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=251832
One of the attachments is the stabalization list... simply append that list to your /etc/portage/package.keywords and do an:
Code: | emerge -DuN xorg-server |
After the emerge completes (successfully) re-run Xorg -configure. The new xorg-server doesn't really require much configuration, but will need a drivers section. The Xorg -configure should take care of that.
Just one other question... are you sure your display is able to handle the resolution Xorg is using? It could be that your display is going out of sync and blacking out. |

There are problems with nvidia-drivers-180.35, so if you have that version, mask it and downgrade to 180.29. _________________ "Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves." - Abraham Lincoln
