Hello Everyone,

I tried to update my gentoo system with the command :
emerge --update --usenew --deep world
I have like 15 packages to update but it won't emerge the ati 8.501 driver, so rest of the update isn't done.
I tried to update the ati-driver using the --oneshot option. Now it is updated, but still when I issue the world update
it wants to update back to 8.501, which doesn't build. I also tried masking 8.501, but that didn't help either.

When telling it to install the newest version (which needs the ~x86 keyword) a lot more dependencies are getting pulled in that
are masked. So that didn't seem like a good idea. I did install it using --oneshot, like mentioned before.

BTW i'm using this kernel : sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.27-r8 (2.6.27-r8)

Kind regards,
Leander

Is there any reason you want to stick to FGLRX instead of xf86-video-ati? The open source driver has equivalent support for almost every AMD/ATI video cards. It might be worth trying it.

I use it for gaming sometimes. I guess this driver performs the best for gaming since you can download it as well on the ATI site.
(Not that I did, I used emerge).

You did give me an idea, remove the ati driver and update, then install ati driver again after the update. I'll let you'll know if it worked.
Thnx for responding

The driver you try to compile is quite old. It is possible, that it wont compile because of your quite current kernel. You should unmask the latest driver instead. This should compile without any issues.

In fact, not really. First that version of fglrx is incompatible with 2.6.27, as bbgermany wrote. Next xf86-video-ati performs nearly as well as the proprietary driver. Finally it's a free driver and is worth the try.

ATI drivers (from AMD) are known to be limited and buggy and not to follow the latest specifications of Xorg. Try xf86-video-ati and you might be surpised as well :-) .
