PostPosted: Tue Feb 17, 2009 6:16 pm    Post subject: alpha: not booting kernels >=2.6.27 [SOLVED] Reply with quote

hi,

on my alphapc 164lx i cannot boot kernels >= 2.6.27. so far i tried gentoo-sources-2.6.27-r{7,8}.
i will try other ones too, but i am not too optimistic.
because of this i believe that it will not make much sense to try .28 kernels.
the result can be seen here.
any hints very welcome.
Code:
# emerge --info

Yes, the 2.6.28 series is known to be bad on Alpha.

Recently an Alpha/Linux Kernel developer came alive and submitted quite a few patches to fix bugs. I believe the bug you're seeing is fixed in 2.6.29. I'm running 2.6.29_rc2 on my UP1500 happily.

In this thread, the user could not boot his Miata when the Alpha system type was set to Miata, but could boot when it was set to generic.

I'd be worth a shot to set System setup -> Alpha system type to generic.

the system type is set to generic. but i could try the other way round and set s specific type.
my system is a alphapc 164lx, an available system type, although uname -i says: EB164, which would be available as an option too in the kernel config.
what would you choose?

matt, could you please post the output of emerge --info of the machine where you are running 2.6.29_rc2?

That's a UP1500. Unfortunately, I don't have any LX164 (nor anything similar enough). I'd go with the specific machine type setting (EB164).

In this case, the the board has a specific machine type (LX164).

Alex, I'd suggest that you file a bug report upstream in the Kernel Bugzilla.

very weird.
i just got kernel 2.6.27-gentoo-r7 with system type generic working.
prior to compiling it i upgraded glibc to 2.9_p20081201-r2 and gcc to 4.3.3. i wonder if really that can make the difference.
anyway, i am currently compiling 2.6.29_rc2. let's see what it does.

now going for 2.6.29-rc2.
EDIT: 2.6.29-rc2 working too. very nice.
now going for 2.6.29-rc5 again.
EDIT: 2.6.29-rc5 working too. no idea what really changed the situation.
at least it works now.
thanks for the help.

It looks like we again underestimated... magic.

Great to hear that it works. :)
