|
|
Hello all,
I'm trying to install Gentoo on a brand new Dell Gx 760 desktop but unfortunately
the network can't start. I guess that the e1000e pilot given is out of date so my
question is :
what is the best way to complete the installation ?
I've a Fedora 10 boot CD that runs well with this network card. Is there a way
to boot with this CDROM and then continue with a Gentoo install ?
Or may someone publish a Gentoo install CDROM running ok for the
Intel 82567LM Gigabit network controller ?
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers.

lagadu,
Welcome to the Gentoo Forums.
The Gentoo Install CD is depreciated. There are no plans to do another binary installer for gentoo.
You can use any CD that will provide a root shell and a few basic tools to do the preferred stage3 install.
In the root shell, do Code: | makedir /mnt/gentoo | now follow The Gentoo Handbook
This method takes longer than the instal CD but you learn the skils you will need to maintain your gentoo before it has any of your valuable data on it. _________________ Regards,

I've got also problems with my network, I can't find driver for my integrated networking card from Gentoo's minimal installation CD, and I don't know how to fetch GPL-2 atl1e from my USB memory-stick. I've already got driver on stick so you don't have to post that but some good advices would be nice. Motherboard which network card is integrated in is Asus P5KLP-CM. I'm new with Linux and specially with Gentoo, so beginner-like advices thanks.

Sorry I didn't understand your advice well enough to solve the problem... I try to give better picture of my problem: I have Gentoo minimal install cd, that I've just couple of days ago downloaded. Then I put cd into my brand new computer (so it doesn't have any os or other data on hard-drive yet), and start installing Gentoo. I follow handbook as well as I can and reach point "3. Configuring your network". When I type ifconfig command in I cant see any devices besides lo. After trying that I type in command "# ls /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/net", but I cant find my network driver which is GPL-2 atl1e (I suppose). I downloaded driver on my laptop (not the one I'm installing Gentoo on), but I can't put driver into that another computer because I can't put it in there from cd (because it already has that minimal install cd in it), and on the other hand I'm too n00b to use usb stick. So the main problem is that I can't use shell to go to my usb stick and modprobe GPL-2 atl1e.
I hope that helped to understand my problem better, if you didn't understand it at the first post I sent.
But thanks anyway for the REALLY quick response. |

Morso,
If you could move the downloaded driver to your gentoo, it would not help.
You cannot yet build it there.
You problem is caused by the kernel on the Gentoo liveCD being too old for your new computer.
You need a newer kernel. As you can install Gentoo from any liveCD (none of the liveCD goes into your install) the suggestion is that you download and use the SystemRescueCD, which is gentoo based and has a newer kernel, to do your install. _________________ Regards,
