gaim support for danish characters

I've just emerged Gaim - and when I write danish characters, it stops sending the rest of the line after that character (incl. it). when I receive danish characters, it displays ?.

The console I emerged it in, supported writing æøå (the danish characters)..

what can I do to fix it? the Gaim-rpm I used on my Mandrake system never had any problems.
