I have been up to now blissfully not very aware of if packages were from portage or kde-testing. I believe I had unmasked 4.2 in kde-testing when it came out and did what I needed to do to keep it updated to now 4.2.3. It may be portage now. I haven't used anything from qting-edge until now from trying out 4.2.87 and needing that PyQt4 version.

I haven't really had any problems to speak of with kde-4.2.3 but I suppose it could be I've screwed up between portage and kde-testing. I could just revert back to what I had and forget 4.2.87 but I did want to give it a try. Seems like the pykde4 version that I'm trying to emerge is colliding with already installed version but I don't have a great grasp of this. cheers, JD

[edit] I guess my question would be if there was a way to find out what I've borked. I'm not sure that when I type emerge -avu @world that pykde4-4.2.87 should be wanting to install in a slot (NS) but also colliding with the already installed pykde4-4.2.3. How bad might it break things to uninstall the 4.2.3 version and slot install the 4.2.87 version?

Excuse me but... what is the difference between:

KDE-4.2 live (4.2.9999) in the kde-testing overlay.
KDE live (9999) in the kde-testing overlay.

4.2.9999 is the stable branch, the one they make 4.2.x releases from. Use this if you want to watch 4.2.3 turn into 4.2.4.

4.999 is the UNstable branch, which is where 4.3 beta 1 came from and what will develop into beta 2, rc 1, and then 4.3.0 final.

hunky,
Are you using the kdeprefix USE flag? If so, you should have both 4.2.3 and 4.2.87 in /usr/kde/. If you aren't using kdeprefix, maybe that might explain the pykde4-4.2.87/pykde4-4.2.3 collisions. On the other hand, if it wants to install in a slot, the collisions would make no sense (at least to me).

When you update kde-testing, many things can change everytime time. I always go back and check if all my stuff in /etc/portage/ is still correct. At times, my masking/unmasking and keywords have stopped working, and I have had to refigure it all out in order to keep portage from trying to downgrade stuff or even find the needed ebuilds in the overlay.

I have always used symlinking in /etc/portage as recommended in the overlay Documentatiion README's, which as I understood it is supposed to prevent problems like that when the overlay is updated. Apparently, this is still a work-in-progress, as I invariably run into problems most times I update the overlay. Especially since I am using both kde-testing and qting-edge.

More likely, I'm probably just missing something basic, or have made stupid mistakes in my editing or adding/removing packages in /etc/portage and/or the overlays. :roll:

In order to get things to work, I always seem to have to add stuff directly into an "other" file that I create in the package.unmask or package.keywords directories in the overlay Documentation itself. I realize this can't be correct, but it seems the only way I can get it to work. My problem is that every time I update the overlays, I have to redo everything :? I'm using both qting-edge and kde-testing live 9999 for a long time, and always get them to work, but my procedure is really getting ridiculous.

Whatever I'm stupidly missing, I sure would like to be enlightened. :?

hunky- please excuse my digression, but rest assured lots of us are having weird inexplicable problems, too. :wink:

I am using kdeprefix. In /usr/kde I have 3.5, 4.2, 4.3, and live from perhaps something I did several months ago.

The "NS" on pykde4-4.2.87 when I do an emerge -avu @world shows slotted, but it is colliding with previous pykde4 installed in the directories I mentioned above that don't appear to necessarily be in any slot. Just /usr/share/sip/PyKDE4 and also the /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/PyKDE4 directory.

I guess I'm guilty of not symlinking the unmask and keyword files but just grabbing them from the Docs directory and tweaking to make them work, since they usually miss a package or two.

thanks for your note. I'm about to just try uninstalling pykde4 and letting the update proceed. Then try rev-dep rebuild to see what happens. I've always got fvwm and fluxbox installed to fall back on if I really mess up. /jim

[edit] After this error I tried emerge --resume --skipfirst and I got an error message saying invalid resume list. So I just did a emerge -avu @world again and things are progressing. It stumbled again on pykde4 - colliding with pykde4-4.2.3. I tried to uninstall that and it said it couldn't because it was part of the set kdebindings-4.2. So I unmerged that which unmerged some kross stuff and pykde4. Now pykde4-4.2.88 compiled - so will see what the fallout may be, if any.

hunky,
Have you checked your /var/lib/portage/world and world_sets files for something amiss?
BTW, I've found it better for me if I always use emerge -v1 to keep all of my overlay stuff like kde-svn and qting-edge out of world and world_sets. Previously, in emerging/removing various files or sets from different kde/qt versions if they wound up listed in world/world_sets they would cause problems trying to draw in unwanted versions of various stuff.

Keep us posted on your pykde4 adventures. :)

KDE-4.3 worked HORRIBLE here, I had to downgrade to 4.2. I really don't know the deal...

Anyway, when I use konqueror with other wm (e17 for instance) it does not recognizes any kind of application. I mean, every single file I try to open it asks for the program name, and if I try to save this information it does not really saves. There is something that I'm supposed to initialize in order to get this working outside a KDE session?

Here's my world_sets, which has some appearance of irregularity (for instance no kdenetwork-4.2, but it is installed):
Code:

@kdeadmin
@kdeartwork
@kdeartwork-4.2
@kdeartwork-4.3
@kdebase
@kdebase-4.2
@kdegraphics
@kdegraphics-4.2
@kdemultimedia
@kdemultimedia-4.3
@kdenetwork
@kdenetwork-4.3
@kdepim-4.2
@kdepim-4.3
@kdesdk-4.2
@kdeutils
@kdeutils-4.3
@system
Obviously haven't gotten 4.3 installed fully yet. For instance I haven't even tried @kdebase-4.3 yet- just the sets installed that didn't require pykde4.
My world file only has kde-base/marble and kde-misc/krusader in it for kde and has no python reference, so I don't know. I always try to use emerge -av1 on things that I think should be installed as dependencies, but sometimes may forget.

Now I have a package collision with plasma-workspace-4.2.88:
Code:
 Detected file collision(s):
 *
 *      /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/PyKDE4/plasmascript.py
unless maybe if I do a -python in the package.use file. I'm still having that libknotificationitem problem though.

Anyone else experiencing crashes with pykde4?

I had the same problem for a long time, and the way to solve it was to modify a config file.

The file you want to modify is /etc/dbus-1/system.d/bluetooth.conf. What you want to add to it is the following policy:

Quote:

<policy group="bluetooth">
<allow send_destination="org.bluez"/>
</policy>

Just be sure the group bluetooth exists and the users you want to grant access to belong to it.

amarok-9999:2 currently doesn't build on my system:

Code:

-- Performing Test BINDINGS_RUN_RESULT

It keeps hanging there forever. I'm not sure if that wasn't introduced with kde:4.3

We still are trying to find the problem and not just disable test - of course package in tree won't have one.

I've got the same problem here. I can't compile pykde4, even rebuilding sip and PyQt4 before. Is there any way to get this working?

I emerged kde-4.2.88 and although it looked nice and new and shiny, the first app I tried in it (digikam) crashed on opening. Then I saw that 4.2.4 was finally available to tried to emerge it but ran into some blockers - so I just unmerged 4.2.88. However, I cannot get pykde4 to emerge. It could be I have qting-edge PyQt4 installed, so I could try getting rid of it.
I have: dev-python/sip-4.7.9
dev-python/PyQt4-4.4.5_pre20090208-r2

But thought I would post the errors anyway:

Just updated to KDE 4.2.88 over night, besides forgetting to compile plasma-workspace without python use flag, everything worked well.

Now I'm facing a different problem with global shortcuts: Just wanted to assign F12 to Yakuake, but it fails with the following error:
Quote:
The shortcut 'F12' conflicts with the following key combinations:

Also I'm not able to assign any other shortcut globally for yakuake - in the kde's kontrol center I'm able to assign a global shortcut. I rebuilt yakuake, tried a clean user profile, but with no avail. Now I'm wondering if it's yakuake or kde 4.3's fault...

Make sure yakuake is linked against your latest KDE. I had this problem because it was linked against 4.2.3 which I also have. Portage chose minimal KDE version available.

2[kde-testing] devs, it seems rekonq also needs KDE 4.3 to build, like kdebluetooth4.
And a small bugfix:

Code:

Make sure yakuake is linked against your latest KDE. I had this problem because it was linked against 4.2.3 which I also have. Portage chose minimal KDE version available.

If it links, ship to customer.
