Hello, my problem is pretty much what is described in the subject. When gnome enteres and nautilus is displayed in the splash screen it takes too long to load - about 3 minutes and that don't seem normal. I have compiz installed and if I open a window before the loading completes my windows have no borders, i can't move them, can't open 2 windows at a time and all those king of stuff.

I know that it is not normal because when i firstly installed gnome everything was loading very quickly. I searched the forum and found a couple of topics with that problem, but i didn't found a particular solution. There were tries to remove temporary folders, re-emerge some packages etc. and i try some of those but nothing improved it really.

my pc is a dual core with 2giga ram so i think it sould be quicker than it is now.

i would appreciate some help on this.

thanx in advance
best regards
max

Ok i updated to the new unstable gnome 2.24.2 just to see if smt will change. I updated the config files. Everything seems fine, but the "the panel" still loads more time than it has to. It takes some minutes. And i don't see smt so much important in log files of x and /var/log/messages.

i hope that a day will come that what was wrong configured will go away and the splash sreen won't be so slow :P

here is my .xsession-errors output

Code:

Conky: desktop window (13b) is root window
Conky: window type - normal
Conky: drawing to created window (0x1a00003)
Conky: drawing to double buffer

that compiz-error i think is not important because i have the default gnome windows decorator. I have removed compiz ...

I really can't tell what's wrong from this log.

Try disabling conky? It is pure guess.

Nah, the gnome hangs before even conky gets loaded. And i had that trouble even before installing conky. At that time gnome was hanging after "the panel" loading at the "nautilus". Then i decided to mess things around and i was removing .gnome files. Updated gnome, removed, installed and reinstalled but nothing.

Searching around i saw that some people were telling that it has to with x window system trying to bind to some ports automatically, and that was the reason for the delay, but checking the .xsession-errors that (if that is PM autoprobing tcp port) seems to be ok.

I'll check compiz and window decorators because i messed up them a bit.

I'm absolutely delighted! :D I finally solved that issue.

It had to do with compiz. That error was the problem :

Code:

/usr/bin/gnome-wm: line 131: exec: compiz-decorator: not found

I changed my /usr/bin/gnome-wm like SeaTiger suggested in that post:

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-704318-highlight-gnomewm.html

and everything is ok. Splash screen just flashes away after 1 second.

It seems that after updating to latest compiz-0.7.8 some initialization commands changed and the window-manager would hang for a while. Correct me please if i'm mistaken.

thank's a lot!

Oops, I thought you removed compiz so I didn't think in that direction. But still glad to be able to help "indirectly" 8O :D
