Hello,
I know this is probably something stupid, but I just can't seem to get the most current (portage-stable) kernel to compile, and it is very frustrating. I have been following the gentoo docs, and the gentoo wiki.
I get this every time:
Code: |
# make O=~/build/dom0 menuconfig
HOSTCC scripts/basic/fixdep
HOSTCC scripts/basic/docproc
GEN /root/build/dom0/Makefile
HOSTCC scripts/kconfig/conf.o
HOSTCC scripts/kconfig/kxgettext.o
HOSTCC scripts/kconfig/mconf.o
HOSTCC scripts/kconfig/zconf.tab.o
HOSTLD scripts/kconfig/mconf
HOSTCC scripts/kconfig/lxdialog/checklist.o
HOSTCC scripts/kconfig/lxdialog/inputbox.o
HOSTCC scripts/kconfig/lxdialog/lxdialog.o
HOSTCC scripts/kconfig/lxdialog/menubox.o
HOSTCC scripts/kconfig/lxdialog/msgbox.o
HOSTCC scripts/kconfig/lxdialog/textbox.o
HOSTCC scripts/kconfig/lxdialog/util.o
HOSTCC scripts/kconfig/lxdialog/yesno.o
HOSTLD scripts/kconfig/lxdialog/lxdialog
scripts/kconfig/mconf arch/x86_64/Kconfig
#
# configuration written to .config
#
*** End of Linux kernel configuration.
*** Execute 'make' to build the kernel or try 'make help'.
# make O=~/build/dom0 && make O=~/build/dom0 modules_install
GEN /root/build/dom0/Makefile
HOSTLD scripts/kconfig/conf
scripts/kconfig/conf -s arch/x86_64/Kconfig
Using /usr/src/linux-2.6.18-xen-r12 as source for kernel
/usr/src/linux-2.6.18-xen-r12 is not clean, please run 'make mrproper'
in the '/usr/src/linux-2.6.18-xen-r12' directory.

Now... I found in the gentoo docs that they recommend <gcc4, so I recompiled the entire system in this:
Code: | sys-devel/gcc-3.4.6-r2 USE="fortran nls (-altivec) -bootstrap -boundschecking -build -d -doc -gcj -gtk (-hardened) -ip28 -ip32r10k -libffi (-multilib) -multislot (-n32) (-n64) -nocxx -nopie -nossp -objc -test -vanilla" 0 kB |
You can run 'make mrproper' til the cows come home, and it doesn't change a thing.
Still no joy...
What the heck is going on here? Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks!

um... okay..
The problem was that I had .config file in the /usr/src/linux directory... eventhough I was jamming the output to the ~/build/dom0 directory. So, it is safe to do a make clean, make mrproper in the /usr/src/linux/ dir -- but don't do it in the output dir! Now, why it cares about a .config in the /usr/src/linux dir... I have no idea! Doesn't seem like it would hurt anything...
