ive just done a text-based install from the liveCD .
the live CD cant configure X correctly . I do X -configure , and startx gives me the gray screen but i cant exit from it.

If I reboot ,reconfigure X with X - configure and type gdm if starts a couple of times and im left with a 'failed to start X server message'

Code:

but other than that there seemed to be no problems.

On rebooting to start from the HD it goes through the BIOS screen and then hangs - No messages at all

are these problems related ?

Well, if you get the gray screen, then you have X. Exit with ctrl+alt+bksp.

Did you copy /root/xorg.conf.new to /etc/X11/xorg.conf?

Please post output of rc-status

You sem to be missing a few services. I would suggest adding at least dbus and hald to your default runlevel. Here is mine
Code:
rc-status
Runlevel: default
 dbus                                                              [  started  ]
 net.eth0                                                          [  started  ]
 avahi-daemon                                                      [  started  ]
 avahi-dnsconfd                                                    [  started  ]
 syslog-ng                                                         [  started  ]
 exim                                                              [  started  ]
 hald                                                              [  started  ]
 netmount                                                          [  started  ]

Oh, I hadn't even noticed you were running off the liveCD. I 'm almost pretty sure you need to be in your system chroot to run stuff like X -configure, and definitely certain to add services to runlevels via rc-update.

I suggest you finish the basic installation, reboot your kernel then do all this other stuff, unless you want to be running off the liveCD. :P

sounds like a master boot record (MBR) problem.
sounds like you need to reenter the new system on the hard drive, check that grub (the program} is installed as part of the system, run grub and install a new MBR.
Code:

grub

this will give a grub command line:
Code:

grub> root (hd0,0)

root (hd0,0) is used as a simple example. This should be the disk and partition where the /boot directory resides. For this example; the first disk's first partition (in fstab terms sda1}.
Code:

grub> setup (hd0)

This will write/rewrite the MBR on the first hard drive.
Code:

grub> quit

If your computer has only one hard drive the example above should be valid.
There is lots of grub info in the aptly named grub error collection sticky thread.

Please post the /boot/grub/grub.conf and /etc/fstab files and also the output of grep ^CONFIG_BLK /usr/src/linux/.config from the installed system mount.

ive changed the grub.conf to point to the correct kernel, but I still have a black screen on trying to boot the system.
but i thought the livecd installation should have given me a working system !

Yes, well, one would think so, but I never used the liveCD, so I don't know.

Have you started dbus and hald and copied /root/xorg.conf.new to /etc/X11/xorg.conf? Did you also add net.ethx to the default runlevel? You seem to be missing a couple of other services like netmount and udev-postmount, and vixie-cron would also be a good idea.

black screen after BIOS almost always is a MBR/bootloader/bootmanager problem
restart computer, enter BIOS see if BIOS boot options include the hard drive.
Is there only one hard drive?

in the chroot run:
emerge grub
then run:
grub
root(hd0,0)
setup (hd0)
quit

Try it like this
Code:
grub> root (hd0,0)

notice the space between root and (hd0,0)

After chrooting, run env-update && source /etc/profile. That way your $PATH variable will be updated and /sbin/fdisk should be available.

Could be. I think I heard something about that.

When you are in the grub prompt does TAB-completion produce any output?

If you type
Code:
grub>  root (TAB
for example?

Back to BIOS:
Does BIOS detect your hard drive?
If so does BIOS list the hard drive as a boot option?
Is password protection (or any other form of MBR protection) invoked in your BIOS?
Any possible leftover protective function from openNAS?

try the minimal cd. Follow the Gentoo handbook carefully for the install.
I've been playing around with the livecd and find it unsuitable for trouble shooting.
BTW have you checked BIOS to verify your drives are detected and listed as bootable?
