Can it be done?,

I run into a problem as soon as the installation script asks:

"What is the directory that contains the init directories (rc0.d/ to
rc6.d/)?"

(obviously gentoo not being SysV, they'll be a problem)

There is an ebuild for vmware-workstation (app-emulation/vmware-workstation). You still need your license key though.

Yeah I had the same situation until I realized there was a gentoo build for it. emerge the gentoo build and it will install flawlessly (did for me anyway). Yes you still need a key. Once all that was out of the way it runs perfectly, and I've even got some windows developers switching back to linux. Although they are looking at RedHat 7.3. I still have work to do with them ...

hi,

generate the /etc/init.d/rc[bla] dirs by hand - let vmware install - and symlink the scripts in /etc/init.d to the default runlevel.

Why would you do this? If you just use the ebuild for vmware-workstation it will install perfectly. Don't mess up your system for a source install when you have a working ebuild for it.

because it's not an official package. (easy install/uninstall, etc...)

hell, if somethings a package, why fudge it creating sysV stuff?

Hello,

I've installed it from emerge just like you said ( emerge app-emulation/vmware-workstation ) but I still can't run vmware-install.pl It still asks me for those directories and stops we he can't find them.
