How is this possible(tetex blocking/new package?)?Nevermind

With some help, someone recommended to try and rebuild tetex in hopes of perhaps fixing my jadetex problem. However, in going over the package list, I came across a very weird situation involving a blocked package of where it seems to be telling me that tetex is a new package yet is complaining that tetex is supposedly blocking another package and I have to remove it before I can even start. When I try and emerge --unmerge tetex, it complains it can't since I supposedly have no such package. :?:

Try updating the texlive-* packages manually.

I actually tried to do something to that effect earlier (specifically, after doing a search, I tried to run "emerge app-text/texlive-core dev-texlive/texlive-latexrecommended"--assuming that's what you're referring to) and it didn't appear to help, unfortunately. Thanks, though.

I don't have tetex installed (something which eix appears to verify), but didn't realize that texlive had replaced tetex. However, in trying to emerge texlive, I've now run into a problem with feynmf, which I apparently have to build before I can even get texlive to build.

You have an error because the executable "latex" is not found, but normally texlive should provide it.. the error should be somewhere else

did you try first to cleanup dependencies and then to check if you don't have any broken library?

I've tried running revdep-rebuild I don't know how many times now since this entire situation began (and ran it again just now and along with running emerge --depclean) and it appears to still be having problems building just feynmf, nevermind getting to where it can build texlive. In running emerge --depclean, there was nothing whatsoever related to tetex, latex or anything else that had the suffix "tex" to it.

I did notice that I appear to have latex, itself, listed when I check emerge --info and wondered if that may be contributing toward this and would there be a problem if I were to try and remove it from it (make.conf?)?

Nevermind that idea of removing latex from make.conf as feynmf still won't build.

Sorry, I probably should explain what's going on with this and why I'm trying to build this. :oops:

Basically, I began an emerge world 6 days ago (after admittedly putting off longer than I probably should have--the last time I updated my system was back in mid-May and after the problems I ran into that time and the past few times, it hasn't exactly done much to instll confidence in me where emerging/updating my system is concerned. However, regardless, I still love Gentoo enough to where I refuse to part with it despite that fact) and got stuck on the package fontconfig.

The error message told me that I had to rebuild docbook-sgml-utils using jadetex in the use flag in order to build fontconfig. However, I couldn't do so as I don't have jadetex. When I tried building it, it too wouldn't build. I was then told to rebuild tetex, which I've obviously been told is an "obsolete" package and was replaced with texlive. In trying to build texlive, feynmf was listed as being required to build it and now that won't build.

I feel like I'm back at square one so to speak, except that it feels like the closer I seem to get to my goal of being able to fix the broken package I need to in order to proceed with the 200+ packages I still have to go with it (which require fontconfig in some way or have a dependency that does), I feel like I've been pushed a few steps backward with this.

maybe you should first update your system (I mean "system" instead of "world")?

I remember that one time it solves a problem for me.

Another thing that you can try is to use gcc 4.1.2 instead that 3.4.6 (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gcc-upgrading.xml)
and also to update your profile as you are still in 2007.0 and there is 2008.0.

Admittedly, it's been too long since I've done this (and I therefore stupidly can't remember how to--I think the last time I attempted it was sometime last year when I was reminded to), but how do I go about changing my portage profile? :oops:

On a similar note, I could have sworn I updated GCC back in May (admittedly, I don't use GCC for things other than emerging and can't remember ever having to do anything to change over versions other than emerging the new version of it), so if there's an "extra" step in there somewhere that I missed please let me know.

Both my profile and GCC have been migrated over. In looking at what I'm facing with the emerge system option, I now seem to be facing close to 400 packages?!

Something tells me, given the packages that came up as listed when I ran an emerge -p world last time, I'm not going to want to know how bad it's going to actually be this time around as far as how long it will take (assuming I can get the necessary packages I still need to build to actually build).

The one thing I keep telling myself about why it's good that I don't have access to a 64-bit system, is that if I did, it would make the eternity at times it can take my system to build the really big packages seem like torture as opposed to now where I just come to expect for them to take a really long time to build and would rather be left in the dark as to how long it may take with a much faster computer.

Also, my understanding of updating GCC was that supposedly emerging everything after the fact was somehow optional or just recommended and not mandatory?

I'll keep that in mind for when I have to update it next time. In the meantime, I got as far as gnutils (package 250 out of the close to 400 system files) when now that started complaining.

Only one dependance of tetex was still there and blocking texlive, after unmerging it manually, emerged texlive, i've done a revdep-rebuild to check if everything is ok and it was the case.

For rebuilding the full system after upgrading gcc, it is not mandatory but it is more than adviced.. The same when you upgrade glibc, it recommended to rebuild the full system also..

I feel like I'm back at "square one" as it were, after going all through everything suggested so far that I've been able to do (and even triple checking that tetex was, in fact, gone from my system) I still can't get jadetex nor the package I need it for, fontconfig, to build.

I'm also not seeing anything that may be blocking texlive to explain why that's failing to build and admittedly don't know how to check to see if something else may be relying upon it.

Edited to say nevermind. I fixed the problem I was initially having that led me to this. Thank you, though, for trying to help.
