Hi
I've emergeg the last KDE 4.1.2 from portage... It starts and when it should display the desktop etc, I can see only squares (white and grey). I get some system messages from the sound daemon, ALT-F2 displays the run program thingy that does not work (nothing starts, executes or anything).
In the past I've emerged KDE 4.1.67 without problems and it run, was not stable but it worked...
I've disabled the xcomposite flag and recompiled everything and it didn't change a thing. I'm lost...
Anybody got any hint where I should look? |

This looks like a compositing problem.
As a workaround, try to disable the composite extension in xorg.conf

Hm.. With or without composite is the same.
This night I've emerged KDE 4.1.69 from the kdesvn-overlay. It starts without problems, but it's development software and sounds does not work and many apps crash from time to time... I want the stable version from portage anyway. 
Where should I look for errors? |

On #gentoo I was told that the only version of kde3 that works properly along with 4.1 is 3.5.10. Last night I installed it and yes, it works well (there are no more problems like kde4 apps trying to open files), but still 4.1 experiences the same problem (white and grey squares and nothing else).
And yes, the composite extension has nothing to do with it. |

Did this...that was not the problem...
I saw in .xsession-errors that some libraries of kde 4.1.69 interferred with kde 4.1.2, so I've unmerged KDE 4.1.69 (kdesvn-overlay)...

Solved. Deleted all directories of 4.2 that were left behind, disabled some settings in xorg for the nvidia driver (don't know what, because I tried several times till it didn't break anymore)...then moved .kde to .kde3.5, deleted all unknown config files in the home dir... and it started to work.
Now I have to figure out how to get the apps, that need KHTML to work... But this is documented in another topic (https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-710821.html)
To make it short...
Do not install KDE 4.1.2 from the main tree and KDE 4.1.something from kdesvn at the same time. It will break KDE 4.1.
Any installation with kdeprefix is not really working at this time. Hope they fix that. |
