Failed to install gcc-4.3.2

Post by bMd » Sat Oct 11, 2008 12:32 pm

Not sure why I'm getting a file collision with gcc 4.3.2?

Code: Select all

It appears that protect-owned and collision-protect do the same thing. So to fix this remove protect-owned from FEATURES and start over. :)

Hi, how do I do that, I only have parallel-fetch enabled in my /etc/make.conf. Does this mean a re-emerge or can I merge gcc from the first compile?

Remove protect-owned from FEATURES

  • Quote

Post by BrummieJim » Thu Oct 23, 2008 2:20 pm

Hello,
How do I remove the protect-owned from the features without editing the /etc/make.globals. I'm trying to install gcc 4.3.2.
Cheers

BrummieJim,

It seems that I was giving bad advice here, even though it worked. Apparently, according to AllenJB, it is a bad idea to disable protect-owned, and a better idea to file a bug report so that the ebuild can be fixed correctly.

I had the same problem as bMd and I put -protect-owned in FEATURES and GCC-4.3.2 installed and there are no problems.

I suggest that if GCC-4.3.2 does not build, open a new thread, post the topmost build error and your emerge --info. If it is the collision problem, then file a bug report which is what I should have done in the first place. Sorry. :(

EDIT: fixed typo

I started that other thread as I thought that as this one was marked with solved, people wouldn't look at it. Could bMd remove the solved, as it isn't?

Edit /etc/make.conf. For owner protected you remove collision-protect from features. This can't be set per ebuild so it's system wide.

Ahh, thank you. Can this be done once, and changed back after I've emerged this and are there likely to be any negative consequences of this? I know how to include things in /etc/make.conf, but do I prefix this with a minus sign to remove them?

Thanks,

file collisions are bugs. if you disable collision-protect you can potentially delete files that should not be removed. You can edit make.conf or specify "FEATURES="-collision-protect ...list other features here..." on the command line to override make.conf.

Sorry nixnut, that doesn't work. Judging by emerge --info, it doesn't disable collision-protect, whether specified in the commandline or otherwise.

This is an important problem, as it seems you need a 4.3 compiler, with java extensions to compile icedtea, and you can't compile gcc4.3 with java-extensions. Iced-tea is pretty important if you're running amd64.

I think I found a kind of solution:
In your make.conf make sure you have this line:

Code: Select all

PKGDIR=${PORTDIR}/packages
First, build a binary package of gcc-4.3.2

Code: Select all

emerge -B gcc
Second, rename the culprit file causing the collision:

Code: Select all

mv /usr/lib64/security/classpath.security /usr/lib64/security/classpath.security.bak
Third, install the built package of gcc-4.3.2:

Code: Select all

emerge -k gcc
Finally, switch compiler:

Code: Select all

gcc-config x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-4.3.2 && source /etc/profile
It works for me :)

this is Bug 216241

  • Quote

Post by dufeu » Sat Jan 03, 2009 3:50 am

Several points.

1) For those interested: The gentoo bugzilla number is: Bug 216241

Now a disclaimer: I am not a programmer. I don't even play a programmer on TV. My comments below are based upon my imperfect understanding of how I _think_ things are supposed to work. Feel free to correct me and teach me how ignorant I really am.

2) This is a real bug. However, the above suggested work arounds should be harmless. Note the following:

Code: Select all

slizard ~ # equery b classpath.security
[ Searching for file(s) classpath.security in *... ]
sys-devel/gcc-4.2.4 (/usr/lib64/security/classpath.security)
slizard ~ #emerge -pv gcc

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild NS ] sys-devel/gcc-4.3.2-r2 [4.2.4] USE="fortran gcj gtk mudflap (multilib) nls openmp (-altivec) -bootstrap -build -doc (-fixed-point) (-hardened) -ip28 -ip32r10k -libffi -multislot (-n32) (-n64) -nocxx -nopie -objc -objc++ -objc-gc -test -vanilla" 0 kB

Total: 1 package (1 in new slot), Size of downloads: 0 kB
slizard ~ #
The problem here is that the gcc you want to install is trying to overwrite the indicated file of your current gcc.

{edit 1} Removed my suggestion as I hadn't realized it didn't work. Bummer.

{edit 2} Suggestion:

Remove "gcj" from your USE flags in /etc/make.conf.

In theory, you shouldn't need the Gnu Java Compiler for anything. {shrug} But what do I know?
People whom think M$ is mediocre, don't know the half of it.

@ dufeu:

gcc with USE="gcj" is ultimately required to emerge icedtea, which is how I ran into the problem. Apparently, it is impossible to have multiple gcc versions installed all with USE="gcj" without some hackery (e.g. what arabis did). I sure hope this gets resolved somehow.
