When I try to emerge I see the following blockers:

[blocks b ] <sys-fs/e2fsprogs-1.41 ("<sys-fs/e2fsprogs-1.41" is blocking sys-libs/e2fsprogs-libs-1.41.2)
[blocks B ] sys-libs/com_err ("sys-libs/com_err" is blocking sys-libs/e2fsprogs-libs-1.41.2)
[blocks B ] sys-libs/e2fsprogs-libs ("sys-libs/e2fsprogs-libs" is blocking sys-libs/com_err-1.40.11, sys-libs/ss-1.40.11)
[blocks B ] sys-libs/ss ("sys-libs/ss" is blocking sys-libs/e2fsprogs-libs-1.41.2)

The other posts on this topic seem to indicate that these blockers should be fixed in portage but I'm still seeing them. How do I get through this mess?

Running emerge --sync should fix it.

Whoa. This thing was fixed a month ago. Maybe chroot in and get the missing packages from tinderbox

I have ran sync'ed my portage tree (just yesterday - 10/9/08) and I still see blockers listed with a capital 'B'. From what I can tell in reading other threads, this was fixed at one point in time but appears to be broken again in the current portage tree.

What contortions do I have to do to pacify the portage gods on this one?

If you read that thread, the very last post is someone also having the same problem I am but there aren't any replies.

there are a couple of ways to fix this
The way that I did was

emerge --sync #get latest tree
emerge world -uvDf #pre-fetch all source
emerge -C com_err ss
emerge world -uvDa

com_err and ss if removed stop wget and other console interaction working SO a pre-fetch is needed to allow the latest e2fsprogs to install and sort everything out

Thanks Naib. I had to manually emerge e2fsprogs as it still reported blockers with the world emerge but once I did that I was able to run emwrap.sh and update most everything. Thanks again.

Now to fight all those kde blockers...

Hi ,

I just had to go through this a second time. Portage tree now handles this a bit better than a few weeks back.

Code:
emerge --sync

just to be covered:
Code:
quickpkg ss com_err e2fsprogs e2fsprogs-libs

then
Code:
emerge -f ss com_err e2fsprogs e2fsprogs-libs
emerge -C ss com_err e2fsprogs
emerge -1  e2fsprogs

Hello everybody.

Just synced, and:

Code:
emerge --pretend --update --deep --newuse world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating world dependencies... done!
[ebuild     U ] sys-libs/timezone-data-2008g-r1 [2008e]
[ebuild    fU ] app-emulation/virtualbox-ose-additions-2.0.4 [2.0.2]
[ebuild     U ] app-emulation/virtualbox-modules-2.0.4 [2.0.2]
[ebuild     U ] app-emulation/virtualbox-ose-2.0.4 [2.0.2]
[ebuild     U ] sys-fs/e2fsprogs-1.41.2 [1.40.9]
[ebuild  N    ] sys-libs/e2fsprogs-libs-1.41.2  USE="nls"
[blocks B     ] sys-libs/ss (is blocking sys-libs/e2fsprogs-libs-1.41.2)
[blocks B     ] sys-libs/com_err (is blocking sys-libs/e2fsprogs-libs-1.41.2)
[blocks B     ] <sys-fs/e2fsprogs-1.41 (is blocking sys-libs/e2fsprogs-libs-1.41.2)
[blocks B     ] sys-libs/e2fsprogs-libs (is blocking sys-libs/ss-1.40.9, sys-libs/com_err-1.40.9)

From the bug report http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=234907:

Code:
------- Comment  #63 From Zac Medico  2008-09-25 21:28:52 0000  [reply] -------

(In reply to comment #61)
It should resolve automatically now as long as you have
>=sys-apps/portage-2.1.5 and /var/lib/portage/world contains neither
sys-libs/com_err nor sys-libs/ss. If you still have trouble then please file a
new bug and attach emerge --debug output for the case where it bails out due to
blockers.

And, well:

Code:
 emerge -pv portage

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R   ] sys-apps/portage-2.1.4.5  USE="-build -doc -epydoc (-selinux)" LINGUAS="-pl" 0 kB

Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 kB

Is it safest to upgrage to ~amd64 portage to resolve this blocking issue? I haven't read extensively on this issue, but I've noticed others reporting dead systems...

I'm largely running from the stable tree, and don't have com_err or ss in /var/lib/portage/world.

Thanks!

You only need to mask these and the blockers should resolve
Code:
echo sys-libs/com_err >> /etc/portage/package.mask
echo sys-libs/ss >> /etc/portage/package.mask

tried the mask. no dice. I don't even have ss or com_err installed, but they appear to what to install as a result of some dependency. I have tried the suggested portage upgrade with ZERO results. don't know what this is, but i see a lot of comments in the bug list about being "already resolved", which in my instance, and it looks like others also, it is not.

The other thread on this topic has this (thanks to avalchfan and of course DrChandra):

http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=234907#c7

Helped me fix 2 boxes so far (amd64 and x86). For me, the only complication was mit-krb5.

thanks for the tip. already tried this and it does not work for me. There is some talk of portage showing some lower-case 'b' blocker, which would indicate that it can resolve this internally. I don't ever see this 'b', but only this 'B'. neither of the offending packages (ss or com_err) are in my world list, nor do I try to emerge them. Tried removing the "kerberos" use flag...still tries to get com_err which induces the block. Tried also the "packages.provided" indication for these packages...still not clean. for me, this is not solved. guess like those above, I will just wait for a few days to see if this is fixed. thanks again.

fixed my problem by adding "~x86" keyword to app-crypt/mit-krb5. This forced the usage of a newer ebuild, which showed a dependency for sys-libs/e2fsprogs-libs instead of sys-libs/com_err and sys-libs/ss. Wish I did not need to be running this keyword, but I cannot update otherwise.

hope this helps someone.

I did the same thing. I hope the new mit-krb5 package is stabilized soon, so I can remove that from package.keywords.

Ok, I also ended up with unmasking <=app-crypt/mit-krb5-1.6.3-r99 because my previous try to emerge e2fsprogs by removing com_err and ss broke a lot of stuff (util-linux among others).

So what worked for me:

  • add <=app-crypt/mit-krb5-1.6.3-r99 to /etc/portage/package.keywords
  • make sure com_err and ss are not installed (emerge -C com_err ss)
  • emerge -auvD world
  • reemerge any broken packages / revdep-rebuild

I resolved the problem so:
0)Zero step: I removed two package sys-libs/com_err and sys-libs/ss

1) first I masked two pakage:

Code:

  echo sys-libs/com_err >> /etc/portage/package.mask
  echo sys-libs/ss >> /etc/portage/package.mask

2)After I add -kerberos flag in USE variable in /etc/make.conf

example:
Code:

   USE="nptl nptlonly qt3 qt4 -gnome -fam -kerberos"

3)After I rebuild all with:

Code:

   emerge -vuDN world

4)As final step I removed this package, but this step I think that is optional. dunno.

Code:

    emerge -C app-crypt/mit-krb5

Let me know if it works for you too.

It's a really bad idea to unmerge these two packages until you have a replacement. com_err is essential to basic functions.

I fixed it this way on ~x86

Code:

quickpkg ss com_err e2fsprogs
emerge -f  ss com_err e2fsprogs e2fsprogs-libs
emerge -1 --nodeps  ss com_err e2fsprogs

emerge -C ss com_err e2fsprogs
emerge e2fsprogs # gets e2fsprogs-libs as well

you may need to work around md5 problem as above if running stable profiles but that is less critical. You need to take care with the com_err blockage.

A have a similar problem:
Code:

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

when a add -kerberos flag and reemerge packet depending of them and unmerging mit-krb5:

Code:
revdep-rebuild

[ebuild  N    ] sys-libs/ss-1.40.9  USE="nls"

[blocks B     ] sys-libs/ss ("sys-libs/ss" is blocking sys-libs/e2fsprogs-libs-1.41.2)

packets depending of mit-krb5:
dev-lang/php-5.2.6-r7 (kerberos? virtual/krb5)
dev-libs/cyrus-sasl-2.1.22-r2 (kerberos? virtual/krb5)
dev-libs/openssl-0.9.8h-r1 (kerberos? app-crypt/mit-krb5)
dev-perl/GSSAPI-0.24 (virtual/krb5)
kde-base/kdelibs-3.5.9-r4 (kerberos? virtual/krb5)
net-misc/curl-7.18.2 (kerberos? virtual/krb5)
net-misc/neon-0.28.3 (kerberos? virtual/krb5)
net-misc/openssh-5.1_p1-r1 (kerberos? virtual/krb5)
net-nds/openldap-2.3.43 (!minimal & kerberos? virtual/krb5)
net-print/cups-1.3.8-r2 (kerberos? virtual/krb5)

But a have -kerberof flag and reemerge all of them!

Example:
Code:
equery u openssh
[ Searching for packages matching openssh... ]
[ Colour Code : set unset ]
[ Legend : Left column  (U) - USE flags from make.conf              ]
[        : Right column (I) - USE flags packages was installed with ]
[ Found these USE variables for net-misc/openssh-5.1_p1-r1 ]
 U I
 + + X         : Adds support for X11
 - - X509      : Adds support for X.509 certificate authentication
 - - hpn       : Enable high performance ssh
 - - kerberos  : Adds kerberos support
+ + ldap      : Adds LDAP support (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol)
 - - libedit   : Use the libedit library (replacement for readline)
+ + pam       : Adds support PAM (Pluggable Authentication Modules) - DANGEROUS to arbitrarily flip
 - - selinux   : !!internal use only!! Security Enhanced Linux support, this must be set by the selinux profile or breakage will occur
 - - skey      : Enable S/Key (Single use password) authentication support
 - - smartcard : Enables smartcard support
 - - static    : !!do not set this during bootstrap!! Causes binaries to be statically linked instead of dynamically
+ + tcpd      : Adds support for TCP wrappers

What can i do?

P.S. Sorry for my English.

Code:
emerge --sync
emerge -f world
emerge -f e2fsprogs-libs
emerge -C ss com_err e2fsprogs
emerge -1 e2fsprogs
echo "sys-libs/ss" >> /etc/portage/package.mask
echo "sys-libs/com_err" >> /etc/portage/package.mask
echo "app-crypt/mit-krb5" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords
emerge -uvDat world

This worked for me. From what I've read, the newer ebuilds (-r2 and above) of mit-krb5, (~) masked, has the correct rdepend's (allowing it to build with e2fsprogs rather than requiring ss and com_err).

Hope that helps.

-- oh, and the newer versions of mit-krb5 (with correct rdepend's) should be hitting stable soon.
