Should I be able to start 4.2 by putting "exec startkde" in ~/.xinitrc?
I'm getting a black screen when I do that. This is my first Radeon setup, but Xorg.0.log looks okay. Well, good enough.

is there a reason you don't want to use kdm?

Not really. For starters, xdm didn't start.

well then why won't you put
Code:
DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm"

in /etc/conf.d/xdm

and then
Code:
rc-update add xdm default

and use kdm for logon

Same results. Afterall, it just runs "startkde" for you. But, I'm thinking it might be a problem w/ the video card. I'm using the plain vanilla 'radeon' driver though. I'll mess with it when I'm on the clock. Too tired now.

Okay, I got my video card working. Now, on to better problems (KDE related this time).

Machine boots. KDM starts. I log in.
I see the KDE loading icons (in the widget in the middle of the screen).
Those disappear, and generally this is the point where the desktop is constructed. But, it just sits there w/ the default background and the mouse pointer.

Now, I have no clue what logs to look at to see what's happening. :/

A good place to start would be $HOME/.xsession-errors.

Cheers. There's quite a few errors. My guess is the ones below would probably not be good.
For the record, I did a kde-meta:4.2 install from the kde-testing overaly.

Code:

Anything on KDE-4.3 hitting portage? I downloaded the latest sets and keywords, but it appears that stuff is still masked...

Here's what I am trying:

Download and install latest KDE:Manually unmask 4.3.0 stuff (will not be necessary in the near future, hopefully, once bug is resolved) - see Gentoo Bug 280312. Download and install attached package unmask:

Code:
# cat downloaded_package.unmask >> /etc/portage/package.unmask

Unmask any other updated packages that you had previously marked as unstable, which get pulled in as a dependency. (BTW, I am told that you can use the package.keywords for 4.3 as package.unmask as well! Try it! It may work for you, but I did not bother to try, because the process I am describing worked for me.) You may have to manually add additional unmask statements:

Code:
# echo '=sys-auth/policykit-qt-0.9.2
=kde-base/kdelirc-4.3.0
=kde-base/kmousetool-4.3.0
=kde-base/policykit-kde-4.3.0
=kde-base/kttsd-4.3.0
=kde-base/kdeaccessibility-iconthemes-4.3.0
=kde-base/kdeaccessibility-colorschemes-4.3.0
=kde-base/kmag-4.3.0
=kde-base/kmouth-4.3.0' >> /etc/portage/package.unmask

Then...

Code:
## Remove all old KDE stuff
# emerge -C @kde-4.2 @kdebase-4.2 ; emerge -C $(qfile -C -q -e /usr/kde/3.5/) ; emerge -C $(qfile -C -q -e /usr/kde/4.2/)
## Run command again, look for packages that refused to install, because listed in world, and uninstall manually
# emerge -C  kde-base/kmail  kde-base/kdelibs kde-base/kdm
## Look for blockers by trying:
# emerge -pvt @kde-4.3
## For example, I had to uninstall:
# emerge -C sys-power/powermgmt-base
## Install new KDE-4.3 related themes
# emerge @kde-4.3

I'll report back when the latest emerge is done...

[few hours later] ... I performed the above steps inside a KDE-4.2.4 session. :-) The only hiccups I saw was when the icons got removed. .... I didn't have any system icons (K-menu), although the buttons were still there - just invisible. After the new icons were installed, the icons came back. ... Everything went fine until about 5 packages from the very end. I can't remember what it was, but something froze and then killed the current KDE-4.2.4 session. Fortunately, I had launched all the above commands from a root-owned screen session, so the emerge continued, even though the xterm and KDE session died. :-) I watched the last few emerges from console#1 (Ctrl-Alt-F1: screen -x), and then restarted xdm (kdm). ... The new KDE-4.3.0 is really sweet! I like the improved graphic theme, new kwin animations, and improved plasmoids. ... Everything worked great! No turning back for me! :-D

You may have to manually add additonal unmask statements:

Code:
# echo '=sys-auth/policykit-qt-0.9.2
=kde-base/kdelirc-4.3.0
=kde-base/kmousetool-4.3.0
=kde-base/policykit-kde-4.3.0
=kde-base/kttsd-4.3.0
=kde-base/kdeaccessibility-iconthemes-4.3.0
=kde-base/kdeaccessibility-colorschemes-4.3.0
=kde-base/kmag-4.3.0
=kde-base/kmouth-4.3.0' >> /etc/portage/package.unmask

Then...

Code:
## Remove all old KDE stuff
# emerge -C @kde-4.2 @kdebase-4.2 ; emerge -C $(qfile -C -q -e /usr/kde/3.5/) ; emerge -C $(qfile -C -q -e /usr/kde/4.2/)
## Run command again, look for packages that refused to install, because listed in world, and uninstall manually
# emerge -C  kde-base/kmail  kde-base/kdelibs kde-base/kdm
## Look for blockers by trying:
# emerge -pvt @kde-4.3
## For example, I had to uninstall:
# emerge -C sys-power/powermgmt-base
## Install new KDE-4.3 related themes
# emerge @kde-4.3

I'll report back when the latest emerge is done...

Just did the very same thing and it went as smoothly as can be. KDE 4.3 rocks so far. I'm pleased with the refined look and the overall increase in responsiveness. Good work!

That worked for me. The default portage set seems to be broken (at least as of now). I also had a lot of conflicts with qt-4.5.0, so I had to do

emerge -C `qlist -C -I x11-libs |grep qt`
emerge -C PyQt
emerge -C PyQt4

After that it would emerge (at least, until the first emerge failure @ 2 of 271... )

Now, I have no clue what logs to look at to see what's happening. :/

I experienced it often - usually at very first run on new account, definitely upstream issue to me.

In trying to my weekly update, I hit a blocker snag that I don't see how to resolve:

Code:
[blocks B     ] app-arch/lzma-utils ("app-arch/lzma-utils" is blocking app-arch/xz-utils-4.999.9_beta)
[blocks B     ] app-arch/xz-utils ("app-arch/xz-utils" is blocking app-arch/lzma-utils-4.32.7)

Total: 56 packages (48 upgrades, 3 new, 2 in new slots, 3 reinstalls), Size of downloads: 254,315 kB
Conflict: 2 blocks (2 unsatisfied)

 * Error: The above package list contains packages which cannot be
 * installed at the same time on the same system.

('installed', '/', 'app-arch/lzma-utils-4.32.7', 'nomerge') pulled in by
    app-arch/lzma-utils required by ('ebuild', '/', 'sys-devel/libtool-2.2.6a', 'merge')
    app-arch/lzma-utils required by ('ebuild', '/', 'media-libs/libpng-1.2.38', 'merge')

    app-arch/xz-utils required by ('ebuild', '/', 'app-arch/libarchive-2.7.1', 'merge')

For more information about Blocked Packages, please refer to the following
section of the Gentoo Linux x86 Handbook (architecture is irrelevant):

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?full=1#blocked

I have tried adding the unstable (~amd64) keyword to lzma-utils, libtool, and libpng, but that does not help. Any suggestions on how to use the latest KDE4.3.1 version of libarchive and the KDE ark tool?

Thanks!

I am good now. ... I didn't see it at first, but it was an easy fix:

Code:
# emerge -C app-arch/lzma-utils app-arch/xz-utils
# emerge -uDN world

I guess I had become lazy and accustomed to the new portage sorting out a lot of these simple blockers. Anyway, this one required a little human intervention, but not much... :)

I've removed my KDE 3.5.10 and installed KDE 4.2 as described in the KDE4 guide (in a chroot from an Ubuntu liveCD).
Then after a reboot the KDE4 login screen appeared, but I cannot login. It displays a primitive text window with an error message like:
"kstartupconfig4 does not exist or failed. The error code is 3. Check your install"

There appears to be something wrong with consolekit, but I'm not sure if that's really the cause. When I run "/etc/init.d/consolekit start",
the process seems to be started, but the init script thinks it has failed and displays "[!!]".

Anyway, it's kinda difficult trying to solve this problem without a graphical environment. Using lynx to search Google and looking through
the results is not very user-friendly. I've booted my Ubuntu CD to write this comment but I cannot use it to test my KDE installation, unfortunately.

OK, found the cause of my problem here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1167436.
I had copied my ~/.kde3.5 to ~/.kde4 from inside the chroot, as root user.
So the new directory was owned by root and not by me. The solution was to delete the kde4
directory and copy it again, but this time not from the chroot and as a regular user.

This reminds me that the KDE4 guide is a bit wrong about the copying. It says:
Code:
$ cp -r ~/.kde ~/.kde4

While it should be:
Code:
$ cp -r ~/.kde3.5 ~/.kde4

...because ~/.kde is a symlink.

Don't know if it's useful to anyone but me, but I had to add some extra things to package.keywords and
package.use to get kdebase-meta:4.2 and a few extra applications (kontact, kmail and kopete (?)) installed:

package.keywords:
Code:
# KDE 4.2 (extra)
=net-wireless/bluez-4.39*
=net-libs/libmsn-4.0*
=gnome-base/gvfs-1.2.3*

package.use:
Code:
# KDE 4.2
x11-libs/qt-sql mysql
dev-python/PyQt4 webkit
x11-libs/qt-gui mng
net-libs/libsoup gnome

I was using kde 4.2 which was installed according to previous version of http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/desktop/kde/kde4-guide.xml
Now, I try to update it to 4.3 and I think I messed my system completly. The thing is that after copying proper package.keywords file and package.unmask file I had blocks concerning some packages of qt-* being not compiled with qt3support. When I am adding qt3support use flag to those packages, I get blocks that some packages need qt-* being build without qt3support use flag.
So I stuck. I don't know what to do now. I have no KDE at all becouse even going back to kde-4.2 is not possible due described above error.
Are there any ways to fix this except just formating HDD and installing gentoo from scratch?
And honestly - why in Gentoo kde is so big pain in the ass while in other distributions it works out of the box?

Nobody will be able to help you at that (little) amount of information given. For a start, did you install KDE by set oder meta package?

Getting KDE installed isn't a miracle, there are usually some blockers when moving on to a new major release (mostly because of renamed/removed/new packages), but I haven't needed a KDE guide since KDE-4.1.

If you messed things up, the easiest way to get things up and running again:
1. Remove all of KDE-4.2
Code:
equery l -i kde-base/* | grep kde | sed -e 's/kde-base/=kde-base/' | xargs emerge -C

(I'm sure you've stumbled over a similar command in the KDE guide before)

2. Clean up some stuff
Code:
equery depends kdelibs

a. remove those packages still depending on kdelibs (those will be most likely external kde applications you did install by hand)
Code:
emerge -C <removethosepackages>

b. be smart, put those into your own set /etc/portage/sets/myfavouritekde-apps before removing them, later then (after point 3) install them again with emerge @myfavouritekde-apps

c. optional, be extremely careful doing that:
Code:
emerge --depclean --deep world

3. Emerge KDE-4.3

Honestly - is that really a pain in the ass? Knowing a thing or two about your package manager doesn't hurt. Help yourself, using those guides is the best way to learn those things, but for that you need to do more than copy and paste commands, you need to understand.

genstorm,
Thank you for your post.
The thing is that I do not know what kind of information should I post. But starting from the beginning.
I was using kde-4.2 installed according to the guide. I do not remember how I installed it. But before going to upgrade to 4.3 I decided to clean my environment so I unmerged all kde-related packages, I unmerged packages listed by "equery depends kdelibs". I also removed all qt-related packages. Then I removed package.keyword.4.2 file and I copied package.keyword.4.3 file. I have copied proper package.unmask file.
Now, doing
Code:

#emerge kde-meta:4.3

I get this:

Code:
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies ... done!

!!! Multiple package instances within a single package slot have been pulled

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously. If such a conflict exists in the
dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can not be
installed simultaneously.
For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man page
or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

emerge: there are no ebuilds built with USE flags to satisfy "~x11-libs/qt-core-4.5.2[qt3support,-debug]".
!!! One of the following packages is required to complete your request:
- x11-libs/qt-core-4.5.2 (Change USE: +qt3support)
(dependency required by "x11-libs/qt-qt3support-4.5.2" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "kde-base/kde-env-4.3.2" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "kde-base/kdelibs-4.3.2-r1" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "kde-base/libknotificationitem-4.3.2" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "kde-base/kdebase-data-4.3.2" [ebuild])

Ok. But if I add
Code:

x11-libs/qt-core qt3support
x11-libs/qt-gui qt3support
x11-libs/qt-sql qt3support

to my package.use file and again I try to emerge kde-meta:4.3, I get following error:

Code:
mkm-box ~ # emerge -pv kde-meta:4.3

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies ... done!

emerge: there are no ebuilds built with USE flags to satisfy "~x11-libs/qt-core-4.5.2[-debug,-qt3support]".
!!! One of the following packages is required to complete your request:
- x11-libs/qt-core-4.5.2 (Change USE: -qt3support)
(dependency required by "x11-libs/qt-opengl-4.5.2-r1" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "kde-base/kdelibs-4.3.2-r1" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "kde-base/libknotificationitem-4.3.2" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "kde-base/kde-env-4.3.2" [ebuild])

To answer your question: Yes, it is pain. And sounds like a miracle or at least something like being very lucky by having system cofigured exactly as developers have.

Look at this:
Code:
- x11-libs/qt-core-4.5.2 (Change USE: -qt3support)
 (dependency required by "x11-libs/qt-opengl-4.5.2-r1" [ebuild])

A LOT of applications need the qt3support flag, so do yourself a favour and add that flag to your make.conf.

NONE of my installed applications use qt3support flag.
Putting qt3support flat into my make.conf file gives exactly the same problem as described above.

KDE 4.3.1 marked stable for amd64

How to remove all KDE 3.5.10 packages?

Oh really? Now let's have a look at kde4-base.eclass:

Code:
# KDE dependencies
kdecommondepend="
        dev-lang/perl
        >=x11-libs/qt-core-${QT_DEPEND}:4[qt3support,ssl]
        >=x11-libs/qt-gui-${QT_DEPEND}:4[accessibility,dbus]
        >=x11-libs/qt-qt3support-${QT_DEPEND}:4[accessibility,kde]
        >=x11-libs/qt-script-${QT_DEPEND}:4
        >=x11-libs/qt-sql-${QT_DEPEND}:4[qt3support]
        >=x11-libs/qt-svg-${QT_DEPEND}:4
        >=x11-libs/qt-test-${QT_DEPEND}:4
        !aqua? (
                x11-libs/libXext
                x11-libs/libXt
                x11-libs/libXxf86vm
        )
"

In short: every kde-base/*:4 package depends on qt-qt3support.

Ahh man, I can't think. I keep getting this when I try to emerge kde4 following the guide at http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/desktop/kde/kde4-guide.xml#snapshots

Code:

emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy ">=x11-libs/qt-script-4.6.0_alpha_pre:4".

Why do I always do this stuff when I'm tired :(

Why do you want to install a development snapshot anyway? You'll find x11-libs/qt-script-4.6.0_alpha_pre:4 inside the qting-edge overlay, but I wouldn't recommend it for stability...
