This is on my laptop, ThinkPad X40 with an i855GM graphics chip. Working fine on my workstation with nvidia proprietary drivers.

The kernel has also been upgraded, could be something related to that but it does not start with the old kernel either.

I have tried re-emerging the i180-driver, resolved some symbol errors. What else could be wrong here?

Driver      "i810"
to
Driver "intel"
?
Maybe there should be some documentation about xorg 7.4. I wonder if it is in the works for when it hits the stable branch? I'll check it out.

Hehe, I meant Gentoo documentation. It is possible that the X guide might need to be updated to reflect the changes. :)

Yes, please. At the very least make the i810 ebuild print a note about the new name of the driver.
