hi,
i don't know if this is the right place for my topic but I think it is the best place I found.

since a few days the gentoo system on my laptop issues an error with the dbus starting at boot time.

# /etc/init.d/dbus start
localmount
* ERROR: Some services needed are missing. Run
* './dbus broken' for a list of those
* services. dbus was not started.

# ./hald start
* Starting Hardware Abstraction Layer daemon ...
^C * ERROR: hald caught an interrupt

the command "./dbus broken" brings as result: localmount
which is started at runlevel boot

the following command verifies that fact
$ rc-status boot
Runlevel: boot
acpid [ started ]
alsasound [ started ]
bootmisc [ started ]
checkfs [ started ]
checkroot [ started ]
clock [ started ]
consolefont [ started ]
hostname [ started ]
keymaps [ started ]
localmount [ started ]
modules [ started ]
net.lo [ started ]
rmnologin [ started ]
urandom [ started ]

$ rc-status
Runlevel: default
dbus [ stopped ]
hald [ stopped ]
local [ started ]
net.eth0 [ started ]
netmount [ started ]
syslog-ng [ started ]
vixie-cron [ started ]
xdm [ started ]

the status of the default-runlevel services show that dbus and hald are not started and can not be started via the command line (init-script)

I don't understand why the ./dbus broken issues localmount despite that service is already started before.
can anybody help me in that matter?

ps. I dont know exactly but I think the first time the error occured was after installing firefox-3, I unmasked the following packages via packages.keywords:
=www-client/mozilla-firefox-3.0.1
=dev-libs/nspr-4.7.1
=dev-libs/nss-3.12

You could try running revdep-rebuild, and also re-emerging dbus and hal.

Hopefully this will fix it. :)

Please post the output of emerge --info. If you are using dbus-1.2.3, then downgrade to 1.1.20.
