We are having problems with getting our network settings correct. we are installing on a computer which is part of a network being routed by a computer with ISA Management on it. I am able to ping other computers on the network but i am unable to get out of the network. I have no clue about the router settings but I am the network admin and I can make what changes are neccesary. If anyone has come across this problem before or has any ideas on what we can try to get a connection out of our network please drop a note and lend a hand. Thank you |

Tempe,
Boot from the liveCD and get the network up. Then do /sbin/route
which should look like:-
roy@spike roy $ /sbin/route
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
192.168.100.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth0
loopback Spike 255.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 lo
default Moriarty 0.0.0.0 UG 1 0 0 eth0

The entry in the routing table that gets off the local network is the one beginning default.
To add a default route see /sbin/route -h

You can also edit /etc/conf.d/net and add your default gateway there. Then do (comments are preceeded by //):

# rc-update add net.eth0 default //Adds the net.eth0 script to the default boot level |

Here is what it looks like.
Kernel IP routing table

192.168.0.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 eth0
default 192.168.0.2 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 eth0
default 192.168.0.2 0.0.0.0 UG 1 0 eth0
192.168.0.2 is the server IP. I'm not sure what 192.168.0.0 is, but the computer's IP is 0.3.
Devon:
I edited /etc/conf.d/net at the bottom (default gateway), uncommented it, and put in the server IP. I did all of the commands, and things worked the way they were supposed to, but I still can't ping outside the network and can't lynx to the internet.
I think the problem might be with the ISA Server. Every computer on the network can ping each other, but none can ping outside the network (although they can ping the external IP of the server). Every other computer is running Windows XP.
Everything seems to be running fine on the Linux Box. Ifconfig shows that eth0 is set up, and it can ping any other computer on the network. Does anyone have any idea if there is a compatability problem or something concerning Gentoo, or Linux, and an ISA Server? |

So the ISA server is the one that should be providing Internet access? Can the ISA server itself access the Internet? If so, it sounds like the ISA server doesn' have IP forwarding enabled. |

Yes, the ISA Server is the one that connects to the internet, and it can. Oddly enough, all of the Windows boxes can also connect to the internet. I'll check out IP Forwarding, if I can find it.
Another problem might be with the setting up of the proxy. When I tried to do the command, and tested lynx, lynx didn't even try to connect. It just had a red error message, and then quit. |

I've had similar problems with the ISA server where I work and I never did figure out how to get Internet access on my gentoo box. |

I haven't tried any other Linux distro. Since the laptop spends most of it's time at home I haven't really bothered figuring out how to get it to function at work. |

That's not exactly reassuring. Hopefully I can find a way to do this, as I waxed the Windows system and I don't have an installation disk for it. |
