Attempting to play DVD movies causes them to freeze once audio for the menu kicks in (bonus features do not suffer from this). Prior to upgrading to the new 2.6.26* kernel line, movies worked fine. Since it seemed to be audio related and Urban Terror sounded like chipmunks set afire with napalm, I took alsa support out of the kernel and unmasked the *-9999 series (this seemed like the appropriate path ... maybe not? comments?). The problem persists.

Running VLC returns:

Please ignore the title selection -- it was a random grab. Any ideas? Non-DVD formats work fine as do the few bonus features I've tried to access. There was a suggestion to add the "djbfft" USE flag to a52dec, but that didn't work so I removed it. Most searches on that error message revolve around streaming which I'm not doing. At a loss in unfamiliar territory. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Here's VLCs enabled use flags:
Code:
media-video/vlc-0.9.0  USE="X a52 aac alsa cdda cdio dvd ffmpeg flac libgcrypt lirc matroska mmx mp3 mpeg ogg opengl qt4 skins sse truetype vcd vorbis x264 xinerama xv"

I tried removing ~/.config/vlc in hopes something creeped into the config. No luck. While I was there, I played around with the Input/Codecs -> Audio codecs -> A/52 options. For alsa, I tried setting it to a specific device instead of "default." Nothing has seemed to jog it. Since no one has responded and not many posts on this error period, it seems like it would be something on my end.

Going in a different direction, I have had some DVD drive issues. My old drive was having difficulties reading and writing data DVDs. Thinking it was old, I dropped in an unused replacement that was laying around. It too failed to write DVDs (hash values weren't matching). So, I bought a new one and same problem. At this point I decided to upgrade udev and the kernel and then do an empty world update. After monkeying with the kernel, everything seemed to be working. Now I'm having single file errors on validating hash values of the burned data.

In essence, it may be hardware. During the time I could not make DVDs, I was able to watch movie DVDs without issue. Now that I (came close to) fixing the write issues, I can't watch movies. A bit frustrating. Hash errors don't occur for files on the hard drives (either new downloads with posted checksums or archived data I can check against). The filesystem is in good shape. Either way, I guess I'll do a RAM check. If that doesn't show anything and no one has any ideas here, I'll try replacing the PSU as they can odd issues.

A little bit of a ramble, but looking for any ideas I can get. Thanks.

Well, the PSU checked out fine and memtest didn't have any errors. I've dusted it out and checked all cable and memory connections. Updated to vlc-0.9.1. Still not able to play DVD movies. Playing avi, wmv, mpg, mkv, mp3, wav, aac, flac, and ogg all work. I feel better about a potential hardware issue although I've yet to try burning any new CD/DVDs to check hash values. Disappointing.

I've got the same problem. I think it's a combination of an issue with vlc on a specific version/platform for specific MPEG streams, not all streams (DVD's) stop playing. Xine is playing DVD's fine.

For me it started after updating vlc, on my AMD64 I went from media-video/vlc (0.8.6g@04-06-08 -> 0.8.6i-r2) and had some dependency problems. At this moment I'm running vlc amd64 (~)0.9.5. CPU load is 30% when playing. My kernel version is Linux 2.6.22-gentoo-r5 #9 SMP Sat Nov 17 16:10:57 CET 2007 x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm)64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux (yes, I have to update this one also).
