No problem :D

No. That version does not need the any modules package. Just follow the long action list I sent you to get the modules running with that version. No additional modules ebuild is needed. I have one but it is really not needed (if you insist, I could send that as well). Just execute the Perl script and the script will produce the modules for you.

If you want the modules for VMware Server 1.0.x then go with the modules ebuild from the overlay. If you want a new VMware Server edition, then use the ebuild I sent you. It is still not the stable version (it's an release candidate) but it runs pretty well over here.

any ETA for ~arch vmware server 2.0.x ebuilds in the main tree? I tested RC2 on one of my amd64 gentoo builds and it installed flawlessly from the vendor supplied tarball and the kernel modules compiled without error against 2.6.26-r1 gentoo sources. Just thought i would ask as now that it appears as if vmware server 2.0 is now RTM it's quite unlikely vmware is interested in supporting version 1.x

Ask the Gentoo maintainer for VMware.

Not the best approach with Gentoo. Better would be to use an ebuild.

VMware Server 2.0 is past RTM and it's out since some days.

VMware will continue to support 1.x version for some time.

Thanks to Steveb I was able to get my old vmware-server installation upgraded to the new 2.0.* version. It is quite different and I'll have to work with it some more to see if I end up liking it - but no real reason I shouldn't at this point.

I do have a problem - I cannot upgrade vmware tools. If I start the guest and then click on "upgrade vmware tools" in the status pane, I get the error popup:
Quote:
VMware Tools is not supported on this guest operating system.
Check the virtual machine's configuration to make sure the settings match the installed operating system. Consult the documentation for more details about supported guest operating systems.
I also get an Event warning:
Quote:
09/28/08 9:53:15 AM
Severity:WarningTask:Not applicableTask ID:Not applicableObject:Windows XP Home Edition 4Triggered By:jim
Description:
Unsupported guest otherGuest64

I'm not sure about why the 64 - but it shouldn't mean 64 bit as this is definitely a 32 bit host and guest environment. Intel duo-core processor and 32 bit Winxp. But perhaps it got confused somewhere or means something entirely different.

The guest is Windows XP Home Edition and it is named Windows XP Home Edition 4 because of serveral different attempts when I first started trying to get a vmware guest running from another disk. It is installed in my home directory. So at this point I have no audio, USB, and a couple other incidentals. I can live without those since I mainly use the guest for autocad and photoshop.

It was also mentioned to install vmware-modules from within vmware and perhaps this is done automatically as I haven't seen how to do this otherwise. Maybe it wouldn't run without them? Are vmware-modules just the vmci, vmmon, vmnet, and vsock found in /opt/vmware/server/lib/modules/source/? (I'm professing my ignorance here).

I'm doing more forum searches for this but thought if someone knew the easy answer I would toss it out there.

cheers, Jim

Hallo Jim. Have you tried to convert the VM to a new hardware version? I mean in VMware Server. There you can upgrade the hardware to a never version. If you do that, then you should be able to install the newest VMware tools without any issue. Could you try that?

Thanks Steveb,

I'm not finding out how to do it.
The help file says this:
Quote:
Upgrading the Virtual Machine Version
If you created virtual machines with an earlier version of VMware Server or another VMware product, you can upgrade the virtual machine version so that you can take advantage of new VMware Server 2 features, such as increased maximum memory per virtual machine.
<snip>
To upgrade the virtual machine version
1. In VI Web Access, select the virtual machine from the Inventory panel.
2. Make sure that the virtual machine is powered off.
3. Click Upgrade Virtual Machine in the Status section of the workspace.
4. Click OK to confirm that you want to upgrade the virtual machine.
After the virtual machine version is updated, you can configure it to use the features supported with the new version.

I cannot find a place for #3 - there is no Upgrade Virtual Machine and nothing is clickable in the status section anyway.
I've tried to click on "configure VM" in the commands part of interface and I chose the only other option that might work "other guest operating system" besides Windows, and started the VM, then went back to configure to change it back but it was already set back to Windows.

I'm probably not looking in the right place - I've had many "doh!" moments in my past.

cheers, Jim

If your virtual hardware is already in a up to date level, then nothing will show up in VMware server to allow you to upgrade the hardware. Is the version of the virtual hardware already on version 7 in your case?

One other way to upgrade the hardware is to use the VIX API. I sent you an ebuild for it. Just install it and then run:
Code:
vmrun -T server -h https://<IP address of your server>/sdk -u <admin user name of VMware Server> -p <password for admin user> upgradevm "[<name of your VMware storage>] <path to your image>"

For example to upgrade my virtual system named VUAPP0001 I would use (I anonymized the username and password):
Code:
vmrun -T server -h https://127.0.0.1/sdk -u XXXX -p YYYYYYYYYYYYYYY upgradevm "[VMStore on LVM] VUAPP0001/VUAPP0001.vmx"

After doing that your virtual hardware should be updated to version 7:
Code:
sphinx ~ # cat $(sed -n "s:^vmdir[\t ]*=[\t ]*['\"]\([^\"\']*\).*:\1:gIp" /etc/vmware/config|head -n 1)/VUAPP0001/VUAPP0001.vmdk
# Disk DescriptorFile
version=1
CID=6535bef7
parentCID=ffffffff
createType="monolithicFlat"

# Extent description
RW 4194304 FLAT "VUAPP0001-flat.vmdk" 0

# The Disk Data Base
#DDB

ddb.encoding = "UTF-8"
ddb.toolsVersion = "0"
ddb.adapterType = "lsilogic"
ddb.geometry.sectors = "63"
ddb.geometry.heads = "255"
ddb.geometry.cylinders = "261"
ddb.uuid = "60 00 C2 99 91 d3 69 b6-31 d4 41 ed cb 27 0c 46"
ddb.virtualHWVersion = "7"
sphinx ~ #

OK, that makes sense since the hardware version is reported as version 7. So there doesn't appear to be a reason to run the VIX API or are you suggesting doing that regardless?

Otherwise the vmware-tools solution would lie elsewhere?

Really appreciate your help on this and I hope it will help someone else in the future by posting this here.

Installing the VIX API would not be a bad thing since you will get the vmrun application which is very handy. But executing the upgradevm command is not needed in your case. So it's up to you if you want the vmrun application or not.

hunky wrote:

Yes. The solution must be something else. You could use the VIX API to execute the upgrade of the tools as well. But I don't think that upgrading the tools over the VIX API is any different then executing it inside the VM. Could you try to remove the old edition of the tools and then reboot the VM and then retry the installation again with the new version? Would you mind to post the content of your vmx-file for the VM in question?

No problem. The Gentoo forum is exactly for that here. We help each other where ever we can :)

thanks!

I've installed vmware-vix but haven't tried it yet.

I uninstalled vmware-tools via Add-Remove programs in the guest winxp but get the same error message and can't re-install tools, despite rebooting guest and trying powering down vm and rebooting guest.

Jim. This configuration looks strange to me. There is stuff inside the configuration which I have never seen on VMware Server. For example the VMotion stuff. I know what it is but I am not aware of VMotion being available on the free VMware Server. And then the RAW disk for the boot drive. Is that right, that you have a RAW disk for your WinXPHome VM? Is that image you use there created initially on VMware Server or have you migrated that image from another VMware product?

Steve,

No - it has only been vmware-server. I had the system set up originally, maybe 3 years ago or so, as a dual boot computer using two hard drives. When I first set up vmware-server I was able to use the already installed win2000 as the virtual guest by somehow pointing it at that installation. Then something changed, I don't remember what, and it quit working. So I eventually bought winXP and tried it again and almost had success but couldn't surpass the windows authentication problems between booting into windows and/or then running the windows guest as a vm. So I gave it up and just installed winxp into a vm on my linux hard drive.

I don't remember anything about VMotion and I agree this file doesn't look like what I was used to seeing when I had to edit it for the above case (earlier version of vmx config). In this case I think I just went through the basic how-to when installing vmware-server and guest winxp and did nothing unusual that I'm aware of. Here's what's in that directory where the vmx resides:
Code:
jad ~ # ls -la /home/jim/vmware/virtualdisk/Windows\ XP\ Home\ Edition\ 4/

For giggles I tried to run the command line installtools with vmrun and I get this error message in the server task window:
Quote:
Find Virtual Machine By Datastore Path
Task ID:SearchIndex.findByDatastorePath
Target:
Status:ErrorTriggered At:09/29/08 5:49:53 PM
Triggered By:jimCompleted At:09/29/08 5:49:53 PM
Description:
Finds a virtual machine by its location on a datastore
Error:
Invalid datastore format '/home/jim/vmware/virtualdisk/Windows XP Home Edition 4/Windows XP Home Edition 4.vmx'.

When I run the command like this:
Code:
vmrun -T server -h https://127.0.0.1:8333/sdk -u xxx-p xxxxxxx installtools "/home/jim/vmware/virtualdisk/Windows\ XP\ Home\ Edition\ 4/Windows\ XP\ Home\ Edition\ 4.vmx"
using tab completion to make sure I've got the path right. I'm not sure what the [storage] option would be in my case if necessary.

Anyway, can't use the vm now that I've uninstalled tools - it is too slow.

cheers, Jim

chown root:root /home/jim/vmware/virtualdisk/Windows\ XP\ Home\ Edition\ 4/*
chmod 660 /home/jim/vmware/virtualdisk/Windows\ XP\ Home\ Edition\ 4/*

Since the image is in your home you probably want to have access as well. So the last command could be a chown 666 instead of 660. But that this would expose the whole directory to be read/writable by everyone. I don't know if you want that?

Well, I chown'ed and chmod'ed as you said and was still able to fire up the guest winxp. Still get the same error on trying to install tools.
Sure appreciate that you are helping here. thanks again! /jd

[edit] when I installed this version I noticed in the notes at the end of emerge that the vmware sys-admin is set as "vmware". I'm not totally sure what that means and have been firing up the vm by logging in as my user jim. That all works but not sure if there is a more super user for the vm.

Try to login with the root account. Does that work?

I can log in as root (had to add root to the vmware group) but it doesn't seem to make any difference on the problem of not being able to install vmware-tools. Dang.

thanks again - JD

Can you post your VMware Server configuration files?

not sure what all files these would be or where. Here's the /etc/vmware/config file:
Code:
jad vmware # cat config
vmnet1.hostonlyaddress = "xxx.xxx.xxx.1"
authd.client.port = "902"
control.fullpath = "/opt/vmware/server/bin/vmware-cmd"
authd.fullpath = "/opt/vmware/server/sbin/vmware-authd"
loop.fullpath = "/opt/vmware/server/bin/vmware-loop"
libdir = "/opt/vmware/server/lib"
vmware.fullpath = "/opt/vmware/server/bin/vmware"
vmnet1.hostonlynetmask = "255.255.255.0"
vmdir = "/var/lib/vmware/Virtual Machines"
dhcpd.fullpath = "/opt/vmware/server/bin/vmnet-dhcpd"

datastore.name = "local"

datastore.localpath = "/var/lib/vmware/Virtual Machines/"
guest.commands.enabledonhost = "TRUE"
authd.proxy.nfc = "vmware-hostd:ha-nfc"
guest.commands.anonguestpasswordonhost = ""
product.buildnumber = "116503"
authd.proxy.vim = "vmware-hostd:hostd-vmdb"
bindir = "/opt/vmware/server/bin"
guest.commands.anonguestusernameonhost = ""
product.version = "2.0.0"
guest.commands.allowanonrootguestcommandsonhost = "FALSE"
guest.commands.allowanonguestcommandsonhost = "FALSE"
authd.soapserver = "TRUE"
product.name = "VMware Server"
vix.libdir = "/opt/vmware/server/lib/vmware-vix/lib"

In /etc/vmware/hostd/ is a lot of xml files but the NEW_config.xml file mentions vmotion. It might be too long for here so I'll maybe upload it to my webpage if you want to look at any of those.

oh hey,

I just tried to install a new virtual machine to try and compare config files with the old one I want working - and when it came time to pick the guest operating system in the add virtual machine dialog - there was no WinXPhome to choose. Only winxpPro and other flavors. Maybe this is why I cannot install vmware-tools? Maybe that is why I get that "unsupported operating system" error?

I hope that, if this is the case, that someone would know a workaround. I could try installing my WinXPhome as WinXP-Pro but I'm not sure of the ramifications of that.

Otherwise, am I going to have to abandoned my existing vm and go with something like virtual-box - or downgrade back to the portage vmware-server-1.0*?

thanks, Jim

[edit] for a test I installed my copy of winxphome in a new virtual machine but called it winxppro in the dropdown of os choices. So far it seems fine and I was able to install vmware-tools into it. So I edited the old vm's .vmx config file by changing the guestoperating system to winxppro instead of winxphome. If I power it on, I can hit "vmware-tools install" in the status window and not immediately get the "unsupported guest operating system" error. But what it says is that the vm has to be running - so make it run. When I click in the console window to fire it up though, I get the os window but an error pops up saying "Unable to connect to the MKS: Connection terminated by server".

I suppose I didn't expect it to be that easy but seems like I'm on the right track. If anyone knows how to get past that error - what other file may need editing - if possible, I would love to know. Otherwise I have to reinstall all the crap into the new one and probably also fight with the danged activation of that windows install. Last time I had the onerous task of calling tech support at microsoft and would like to avoid.

cheers, Jim [/edit]

Well, I found someone with a similar problem to the MKS error by googling and so did a chmod 754 on the vmx file and could then get it to start without the MKS error. I suppose that isn't secure but I'm behind a firewall and whatnot. I edited the vmx file to change the guestOs line from winxphome to winxppro and then when I had the vm running I was able to install the vmware-tools the normal way.

Now I don't know why but can't install USB devices. The audio is connected, but my wacom tablet say"error connecting remote USB device: etc.." Same with the printer, the key mass storage, the WD MyBook drive, and a few other things.It sees them, just won't connect. If I fire up the vmware-tools program and am on the Devices tab, it just shows IDE and NIC. If I click on the little systray icon for safely removing hardware, it shows a list of hardware devices including a Intel PCI to USB Univ. Host Controller, a VMware Accelerated AMD PCNet Adapter (though this is intel based), a Creative AudioPCI, and Standard Enhanced PCI to USB controller.

So maybe that is another thread because I have finally installed vmware tools - hopefully mouse/video stuff has improved but problems as stated above remain.

Cheers, Jim

A warning on vmware-vix:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-710184.html

I suffered all manner of heartburn by having various packages break because for some reason these packages were picking up the older version of libxml2 installed by vmware-vix instead of the later libxml2 installed in the proper library directory. Glad I finally figure it out - wasted a bunch of time on it.

Could be that it was a problem specific to my system but if anyone else runs into that problem, just un-emerge vmware-vix and you should be good.

cheers, Jim

quick question:

whenever I run revdep-rebuild, it wants to re-emerge vmware-server because of
Code:
broken /opt/vmware/server/bin/vmware-mount (requires libfuse.so.2)

Anyway to fix this?

cheers, JD

PS: and I have installed app-emulation/fuse to see if that would do it.

[Edit] I guess another question:
I want to import a virtual machine that I had earlier to fresh install of vmware-server. The help file says to go to Add Virtual Machine to Inventory via the Summary tab. Alls well there but when I do, it says you can then browse. There's no ability in my setup to browse - just my hostname and when I expand that there is a Standard and I can click it but can't progress from there. /jd
