I don't seem to have this folder (/etc/portage), even though I see it being referenced to quite a bit in the Wiki.
Question 2:
I am looking to install compiz-fusion and firefox 3, but firefox 3 is not in the tree, and the compiz-fusion I see is an old version (0.6). What's the deal with that? How do I obtain the latest versions? (Yes, I have already synced). I am using Portage 2.1.4.4. _________________ Athlon 64 x2 4000+, GA-M57SLI-S4 mobo, 2GB PC-6400 RAM, WD 500GB HDD SATA, Internet: eth0 cable modem. |

chr0n0,
/etc/portage and its files are not created until you do it. They are not essential for normal operation but the files there allow finer control over your install than your profile and /etc/make.conf.
You may want to check some overlays and investigate the use of layman to assisst. _________________ Regards,

firefox-3 is in the tree but still marked testing (~arch). I suppose the same is with compiz-fusion. So if you wanna have the latest stuff, you should rather run ~arch instead of arch.

Thanks.
I have installed firefox 3, but unfortunately Java cannot be used with it unless firefox-3xx-bin is installed. All I can find is the firefox-2xx-bin. _________________ Athlon 64 x2 4000+, GA-M57SLI-S4 mobo, 2GB PC-6400 RAM, WD 500GB HDD SATA, Internet: eth0 cable modem. |

Are you using emerge --search to query what packages are available? Don't do that, it hides masked packages (like firefox-bin-3.x.x).
I like to use http://gentoo-portage.com to search the tree. There are other methods as well, like eix or packages.gentoo.org. |
