I'm trying to install gentoo from the minimal install cd. It is an amd64 archetecture. I've installed it before and the only thing I've done different this time around Is I used the desktop profile appose to the default. When I emerge gentoo-sources, I get some errors at the end(I don't have them on hand). Gives me two error numbers to do with use flags and environment variables.

CFLAG -O2 -pipe -march=athlon64

USE=<empty>
(using amd64/desktop profile) I checked to see if it was properly linked.

properly chrooted as well. Any ideas? If you need an logs, which I don't know if there are any during the install, let me know how and I will try and get them for you.

Any help is very much appreciated thx.

Ok this is the bug I get.
bug 190128 - failed variable assignments
bug 200313 - or bad substitution errors

and this is my emerge --info

After reviewing your emerge --info and cross referencing against one of my 2U smp amd64 gentoo opteron servers it appears your bash version is outdated for undetermined reasons. Both the gentoo bugs you mentioned are directly caused as a result of outdated or specific versions of bash. If you look closely you'll notice your system is currently using bash-3.2_p17-r1

A direct bash upgrade should fix the immediate issue however I would suggest you emerge --sync and then check emerge -uDNpv system for any available system updates.

emerge --info from my 2U server

Code:
hammer ~ # emerge --info

This is what I get at the end. Should I just abandon and redownload? I grabbed the latest cd, stage and portage. This is messed :P

WELL I've been reading online a bit and apparently my bash is out of date, although I have no idea why cause I used the current stage 3 install, but apparently based on what i'm reading the old bash works against the new portage and vise versa the new bash works against the old portage, my question now is how do I upgrade bash without using portage?

You don't; directly anyway.

Use the install CD, chroot into your environment, and emerge --sync and emerge bash. As long as portage is working properly in the chroot environment, you should be able to get the job done. It's worked for me once or twice.

Blessed be!

lol I just tried that before getting your message and I get the same two errors noted above. It doesn't matter what I emerge, it won't properly compile. I'd have to manually download the bash and apply it, and I'm not that good :P.... yet.

I am sooo glad I didn't have that problem. I'll take my messed up /etc/fstab with a dying optical drive over that one any day.

I have heard you can get binaries if they get damaged somehow. If I'm not mistaken, there's something about that site in the sticky about accidentally removing your coreutils program. You might want to take a look at that. It might help.

Good luck.

Blessed be!

Try using env vga="" emerge in place of emerge.

Alright guys problem sovled, what desultory said worked! And I found out why I didn't experience this problem before... I used all the latet packages but instead of using the 2008 cd, I used the 2007.

Yeah, it's the CD at fault (or rather the broken grub on the CD), that should be a well known problem already (many peeps come to #gentoo with that problem).
One can only hope that they make a new build of the CD soon.

As a workaround, either when booting with grub press 'e' to edit the kernel parameter command line and add some bogus parameter at the end (like foobar=) so that the random crap attached to the kernel parameter line by the broken grub will not end up in the vga parameter, messing up your system. Or, as already suggested in the other thread, clear the env variables that ended up with random crap contents (usually vga=).

Thx everyone for the help.
