It seems that gpm is not loading by default on the LiveCD?

Also, no cool framebuffer art this time, eh? Too bad...

Nothin new here. Do yourself a favor, use sysrescueCD as boot media and grab a stage3 from funtoo.org

Why should he use funtoo when they just released a new official install media??
Because the just released stage3s were outdated before they were released. funtoo.org already had more recent ones. Besides, funtoo.org provides more choices of CPU: http://www.funtoo.org/linux/

Thanks.

Why is everyone excited about a new LiveCD? I almost always do my Gentoo installs using some other livecd, one that has the most current hardware support and the most useful applications. Sometimes the Gentoo LiveCD is the most current, but that's rare. That's not a fault of the developers, as with any livecd there's probably something with a newer kernel or newer applications released a few weeks later.

I can see where a networkless install is desired or absolutely necessary, I can also see where this would make support much easier, but for me, now that the LiveCD does not do a network install, I have almost no use for it. As fast as cpu's are now, I still don't want to build an outdated Gentoo system and then have to recompile almost the whole system.

In fact, I always use SystemRescueCD to build my Box. Right now, the Gentoo minimal CD use the kernel 2.6.24 and SystemRescueCD use the kernel 2.6.25.

It finally gets that old hellish stuff off the main page. :) Yay!

And the link for the beta iso for x86 lead to an image that was too big to fit on a standard cd and was just left like that for what, 3 months? :?

Got my system the way I want it, and everything runs so much smoother than in older versions of the system (GCC with a core2 option and prelinking speeds things up a LOT). Thanks guys!

I don't get it... what's new?

I remember the upgrade from 2006.1 -> 2007.0 fixed some glibc problem or something, but is ther anything new (besides default USE flags) in the new profile?

As for the new livecd, what's wrong with something like... sysresccd? It seems like it would take too much time out of the devs' work to get a livecd out, when running alternatives developed by others exist.

And the new stage tarball? Definitely nice, but what's wrong with drobbins' funtoo stage tarballs? Updated weekly.

Besides, is there any use to the installer besides confusing people? Far too many new users try to use the installer, only to have it fail.

Is there any work involved in updating my profile? besides, that is, anything that can be caught by -uDNv world and -uDNv system...

my $0.02

Many thanks, updated the profile and got only 4 packages to update.

Code:
[purplehaze][/home/debaser]# emerge -avuDN world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating world dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R   ] sys-devel/gcc-4.1.2  USE="fortran mudflap (multilib*) nls (-altivec) -bootstrap -build -d -doc -gcj -gtk (-hardened) -ip28 -ip32r10k -libffi -multislot (-n32) (-n64) -nocxx -objc -objc++ -objc-gc -test -vanilla" 0 kB
[ebuild   R   ] sys-libs/glibc-2.6.1  USE="(multilib*) nls -debug -gd -glibc-omitfp (-hardened) -profile (-selinux) -vanilla" 0 kB
[ebuild   R   ] sys-libs/libstdc++-v3-3.3.6  USE="(multilib*) nls nptl -build" 6,047 kB
[ebuild   R   ] x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-173.14.09  USE="(multilib*) -acpi -custom-cflags -gtk" 16,404 kB

Total: 4 packages (4 reinstalls), Size of downloads: 22,450 kB

Would you like to merge these packages? [Yes/No]

Hope everything's ok when the update finishes (I'm a bit scared about the GCC use's update... ).

Greets.

Xfce on the LiveCD was very nice - but why not save space and go for something even lighter like *box or IceWM? Would it not save that much space when everything is said and done?

Is this using isolinux or grub? There were several bugs regarding this that were marked fixed, with only resolution saying 2008.0 fixed it, but didn't say how.
Thanks

It's mentioned in various places around the forums, Planet Gentoo, and even buried in the comments of a bug or two: the CD is still using isolinux, just like the previous LiveCDs.

I'm sorry, but this wasn't so obvious, which is why I asked. The comments in the bugs I could find relevant to this issue failed to deliver any useful info regarding the latest implementation, such as: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=216097 (Summary: Gentoo was using grub legacy which has limitations that even grub2 haven't worked around yet. "This should be fixed in 2008.0, which is now released." doesn't answer what the "supposed" fix is.)

p.s. Plant Gentoo wouldn't offer help to someone who isn't following it, it's not searchable.

Hey. I don't see splash-themes-livecd-2008.0 on the tree. Hasn't it been released?

Apparently not yet. =)

Since this thread was brought back up, I have to ask... There really isn't any update splash themes since 2007.0? I haven't used the livecd to know whether such a theme exists in at least some form (and could be extracted?).

At least, according to this bug, there is no 2008.0 theme.
