Thank you for this new release :)

Just one question, for hardened users, is the new profile the last one ([13]) ?

Code:

  [1]   default-linux/x86/2006.1
  [2]   default-linux/x86/2006.1/desktop
  [3]   default-linux/x86/2007.0
  [4]   default-linux/x86/2007.0/desktop
  [5]   hardened/x86/2.6 *
  [6]   selinux/2007.0/x86
  [7]   selinux/2007.0/x86/hardened
  [8]   default/linux/x86/2008.0
  [9]   default/linux/x86/2008.0/desktop
  [10]  default/linux/x86/2008.0/developer
  [11]  default/linux/x86/2008.0/no-nptl
  [12]  default/linux/x86/2008.0/server
  [13]  hardened/linux/x86

It seems i am the only one disturb by this, but

"Why the hell you drop gnome for xcfe?"

For me the livecd, livedvd is totally useless for gentoo users, maybe a kind of help for the lazzy ones to install gentoo on another computer, but as gentoo update itself, we don't care of a 2008 release.

Considering that, why i'm happy to see a livecd/dvd release : well because i think it's a window for new users, so they can see gentoo running and try/wish to install it. This is perfect to let the community grow and assure long live to gentoo.

Following that logic: why gentoo want to show to people that don't have gentoo, a less-user friendly xcfe than the commonly used kde or gnome ???

Good work guys, but i think that choice was a mistake.

Nothin new here. Do yourself a favor, use sysrescueCD as boot media and grab a stage3 from funtoo.org

The 2008.0 stage3 and portage snapshot are available from the usual mirrors, and they very nearly build. The only glitch I can
find in "emerge --verbose --fetchonly --emptytree gnome" is the glibc library, whose patch file is missing. Set it to ~x86 and all
is well. (You may also have to dig a bit for the timezone stuff, but google will find it).

Why should he use funtoo when they just released a new official install media??

@plazmid: Just use the new 2008 livecd, open a terminal and do a normal manual install. The graphical installer had its problems in the past and obviously still has some in the new release. ;)

Could you justify why you feel Xfce is less user-firendly than GNOME or KDE? Or is it simply that you feel that it is less user-friendly? Do you/have you used anything but GNOME/KDE in the past?

With increasing bloat in both KDE and GNOME using Xfce as the default for the LIveCD to get people up and running allows valuable space within the limits of a CD for other more important system libraries etc. There is nothing stopping people from installing GNOME or KDE straight away, and I'd hope that even a n00b would be able to suss out that to get GNOME or KDE they would simply have to run 'emerge [gnome-light|gnome|kde]' to get things installed if they want to.

Don't miss the forum thread, they are really slamming Michael

The main reason was for space. Xfce instead of Gnome gave us over 100MB to play with, and we needed it as everything got bigger since 2007.0.

Also, the default Xfce looks a lot better than the default Gnome :-P

Sure, download the Stage 3 tarball, change your use flags and run this :

Code:

# emerge -e system

Voila you have a Stage 2 :P
Ok I'll look into that... but still. Why is there not a stage2? There has always been one, even in the beta_2

Both stage1 and stage2 have been unsupported for a long time now and you can do a "stage2 install" (if you really want to for some weird reason) from a stage3 tarball.

Is that supposed to be a reference to "Idiocracy"?

HAHAHAH, How could it not be?

Where else in entertainment/literature/the internet do plants crave electrolytes?

I'm sure after a couple of cases of brawndo, everything will be clearer.

That's great news - can't wait to get back to my PC and upgrade.

Question: If I'm currently running 2008 beta 2, do I need to do anything beyond just the emerge updates?

Nope, if you --sync and --update world, you will more up to date than 2008.0 :D

Quick random question: Do drivers for the Intel 3945 wireless cards exist on this liveCD?
