On the last two versions of Openoffice I am experiencing freezing when trying to open a second document. All worked fine in version 2.3 but 2.4 is consistently a problem. Basically I have one document open, go to the file menu and select another existing document to open. It seems to open a window which promptly freezes with the menu entry still highlighted. The contents of the first window are still displayed. Killing the new window allows me to continue working in the existing window. Graphics are nvidia with the nvidia driver with compiz-fusion running under KDE3.

Any ideas most welcome.

i have no clue actually ( dont use ooo much myself ) but maybe opengl is the problem as 2.4 ships now with support for this.
Did you built ooo with opengl support ? If yes, what happens if you use the open driver for your card, deactivate java and compiz f.ex. ?

hope that helps ...

cheers

I am compiling it myself rather than using the bin version.

I have tried compiling without the opengl use flag and it makes no difference.

What is interesting is that the problem disappeared under Gnome. I am starting to suspect either kde or compiz is the problem. I will try without the proprietary nvidia driver and report.

Thanks for your comments.

I confirmed that the problem does not exist under Gnome, and also that Gnome is also using compiz-fusion. It would therefore appear that the problem may be KDE related. I intend to make a binary package of my existing build and try re-compiling without the kde use flag, which I will do overnight. I'd be interested if anyone else is having this problem.

I have solved the problem though am little closer to knowing what it was. It seemed to fix itself when I updated my GCC and Python and hence recompiled a large number of ebuilds including kdebase. I can only speculate that the problem was caused by some inconsistencies which had crept into my system.

Thanks for all who tried to help.
