I've got to ask.. but since updating to 2.6.24-r8 (and beyond) everytime I build a kernel it is build in x86, and a symlink for bzImage is in arch/x86_64/boot.. is this expected?

Yes, they've merged "i386" and "x86_64" into "x86" quite a while ago.
