This thread is for discussion of the June issue of the Gentoo Monthly Newsletter. We hope you enjoyed reading it!
If you liked a certain article or felt that the GMN was published with something that we could do without, let us know. You can also put your comments and suggestions on how you think the next GMN should be. _________________ <UzzaDead> What is CONFIG_USB_MON?

| A link to the GLEP's page ( http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/glep/ ) or directly to the proposal would have made the council summary better. Even better would of been the inclusion of their abstracts directly into the newsletters so I wouldn't need to look them up. |

What exactly does that mean? Does that mean it's now considered safe to use an LDFLAG and they're deciding to include it by default or it will be considered safe only once it gets decided (and until then it will still void any bug reports containing it)? _________________ “And even in authoritarian countries, information networks are helping people discover new facts and making governments more accountable.”– Hillary Clinton, Jan. 21, 2010 |

We already link to the relevant council meeting minutes in which you can find more detailed notes on what's going on. There's no point in further duplicating the existing resources and text. There's simply not time to fill up the GMN summary with the text of the various GLEPs themselves. _________________ <UzzaDead> What is CONFIG_USB_MON?

In the context of the newsletter, information is neither being duplicated nor does it already existing. Information concerning the current status of the GLEP is provided by both the summary and the log of the council meeting itself, I agree. However, neither source explains what the GLEP is proposing. That would be achieved by the link to the GLEP index, the GLEP's project page, or by including the abstract of the GLEP into the newsletter. As the purpose of the newsletter is to inform and enable people to investigate further if they are interested, I think this is an omission.
Hopefully, this better articulates what it is I was looking for. |

I'll keep your comments in mind. Perhaps in the future we can at least link to the GLEPs. However, including their content, whether abstracts or summaries, is probably out of the question, as it takes too much time. The summaries we work with for the Council and Trustees meetings we have to obtain ourselves, so if there's an issue that they discuss, the GMN staff has to separately determine if there's a webpage or other resource available for it, find it, and figure out how to write it in to the article.
Also, I don't believe that providing just the GLEP abstracts in the GMN article is useful; GLEP abstracts are singularly unhelpful in my opinion, as they contain nothing of what you're asking for; that is, problem and proposed solution/rationale.
This kind of information, which is what you and other folks are looking for, is better provided by reading the full GLEP itself, rather than reading a GMN-provided overview or commentary. However, where possible, I'll see about at least linking to the GLEP or issue in question, assuming the item being discussed has an existing page. _________________ <UzzaDead> What is CONFIG_USB_MON?

It already is considered safe (although there are still some devs who disagree), and bugs concerning this flag are valid. The discussion is about if we should enable it by default. _________________ "Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves." - Abraham Lincoln

Anything else I missed?

Absolutely.
Personally, I have LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1 -Wl,--as-needed" in make.conf, and I know quite a few others have too. _________________ "Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves." - Abraham Lincoln

| Gentoo in outer space -- awesome! Does anybody know which other distros have been used in space before? Or is Gentoo even the first linux distribution to ever leave the planet? |

Did you miss the huge disclaimer that said these were regularly scheduled retirements?
| Quote: | | Note: The number is higher than usual because several inactive developers were retired as per Gentoo policy. This operation is performed on a regular basis by the Undertakers project. |
The vast majority of the listed developers have been inactive for a year or more, so they were retired after repeated contact attempts failed.
Nobody's bailing out on Gentoo en masse. These retirements were for developers that last put in work back in 2006 (or earlier), maybe 2007, and did not respond to repeated emails and other forms of communication on status and activity. _________________ <UzzaDead> What is CONFIG_USB_MON?

We're all volunteers, which means that at certain times we have more time to devote to Gentoo, and at other times life prevents us from dedicating time to this project. And devs come and devs go. The total number of active developers is actually quite stable. _________________ "Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves." - Abraham Lincoln

I'm happy to hear Gentoo has a good number of active developers, when i saw the list i began to worry because i really like Gentoo. I did miss the disclaimer nightmorph pointed out. |

| I thought the PowerTOP stuff was really cool. I went over to their website, and noticed they had some patches to help make some popular programs more energy efficient. Is there any thought of some sort of PowerTOP use flag that would allow you to emerge programs with some of these patches applied? |
